I recently purchased a farmall 400 deisel. The issue i am having is that the serial number is 13xx which would indicate that it is a 1954 however most of the casting codes are a B For the year. The tractor appears to be all original except the hood had been painted white like the 450. Can anyone explain this to me?

Maybe it is a 450 or part of it is. From the t/a handle look where the rod goes onto shaft with two linkage holes in side of center housing. Between linkage holes on the outside of shaft look at the number. 359407R1 was used in a 400 and 366352 in a 450 center housing. Also in the very bottom of the clutch pedal a 400 has a bolt with jam nut to limit pedal travel. 450 just has a casting with no stop bolt. Another 450 sign is push button starting switch with key below gauge panel. May not have the original engine but look on left front of block just below the head for engine serial number and size. Like D-264 or D-281 then a serial number.

Had 450 D serial 1478-S at one time with D-281 engine # 732. Built in December 56. Also had a 400-D with serial number just under 41,000 and built September 56. D-264 engine number was over 21,000 both tractors had B code dates on them.

I understand. But the emblems and several other indicators say it is a 400. I bought it hoping it was a 54 by the serial number. It does have the 264 motor as well as the jam nut on clutch. Both of these indicate 400.

You say a lot of B codes? Serial number is a December 54 built tractor if a 400. On the left side of the center housing near where the clutch and T/A shaft enter housing you should find a Z code if a 400 housing with that serial number. If not a replacement block, down near oil pan and around top or just below the frame rail about center from front to rear you should find a block casting number. Most D-264 cast numbers end in R4. Early like your serial I think would end in R3. Late 400 or some replacement blocks end with R5. R5 was used in 450D also. Most R3 and R4 blocks have a date code between oil pan and coolant side covers toward rear of injection pump and kind of behind it. If you look at the right angle you can see it. Lots of R5 blocks have the date code near rear on the same side partly behind the fuel filters. Does the tractor have 6 spoke rear wheels or 8?

(quoted from post at 22:20:50 04/25/16) NOT sure what problem you are having with your tractor???

Serial number says 1954. Casting codes say 1956.

I would look for evidence of the serial tag being replaced.

I would look for a partially rubbed-off "3" at the beginning of the serial number.

It has 8 spoke wheels. And I will check those other numbers this eve. I have looked extensively and Connor see where the serial taf has been tampered with
