Ebay seller question

I've never sold anything on ebay so I'm curious about something. How is it that a seller can cancel an auction transaction after it has been won by the highest bidder? Had that happen and I didn't know it could. Ebay wiped it off the page so no negative feedback could be left. Sent an email saying to notify them when a refund was sent. Do What? Apparently sellers are allowed to change their minds if they think they should have got more money but buyers are required to complete the transaction if they are the high bidder. Makes no sense to me.

I believe a seller can expire a sell as long as nobody has bid on the item. Now thats how it used to be a while back. I havent sold anything for a while so maybe it has changed

The seller can cancel a transaction if he states the reason is the item was lost or broken after it was listed.

M Man, I hear your story and have argued with E Bay before. As far as making a buyer complete the sale GOOD LUCK ON THAT ONE LOL. As an attorney I can tell you its pretty hard for a Court to force a buyer to buy something if he changes his mind. SURE there are remedies and damages for Breach of Contract but e Bay is no help there. E Bay could "punish" a party but not letting them buy or sell perhaps but they usually just don't do anything in my experience for either Buyers or Sellers. The sale isn't complete until the buyer actually pays and the seller accepts and delivers. Despite all that I have bought and sold a ton over the years and sure some buyers or sellers have backed out HOWEVER you can get your money back via e bay, just no product delivery THIS GOES WITH THE TERRITORY ON E BAY UNFORTUNATELY. When I have sold something it doesn't leave my hands until I'm paid in full perhaps via Pay Pal which has always worked fine. I sold an RV once and was talking to my buyer on the phone and told him he could pick it up once I had the remaining $10,000 and he instantly paid it on Pay Pal as we were talking and I went to Pay Pal and had it transferred to my bank. That all cleared and he came later and drive it home. I'm most cases I demand cash in hand before it leaves.

Forget the attorneys or legal eagle stuff because ebay provides sellers with many ways to short stop a sale. A few that come to mind are; Item found to have defect, description not accurate, item sold locally, item was lost or stolen and if none of that fits you can just plain state that the item is no longer for sale for reasons you don't have to state. If you paid for the item then Ebay will be very prompt with forcing the seller to return your money, if they dont then Ebay will pay you collect from them.

I used to do a lot of selling on there. I really hated them changing everything all of the time. The final straw was when they demanded PayPal only ! I stopped selling about that time too. I sold larger items and would list cash on pick up. I did not even want a deposit most times.
I do buy a few items on there but they are mostly from the ones that sell a lot of stuff at good prices and have a buy it now with free shipping.

Sorry I got side tracked a bit too. It used to be you could stop your auction but only within a certain time of it closing maybe 24 hours ? A few times I would list something someone would come look at it and we would settle on a price and then you shut down the auction and paid your listing fees.

For many people the opportunity to get a good deal is what draws them to e-bay, much like an auction sale.

Numerous times I have been the high bidder on an item after which I promptly paid for the purchase only to have the seller cancel the sale with some B S about they checked the item and it is not working or some other excuse.
Two days later the same item is relisted with a higher starting bid.

One item I bought had no reserve on it and I was the only one who placed a bid.
Seller contacted me stating they could not possibly let the item go for the amount of the high bid, e-bay could care less and let the seller keep on going.
When e-bay started it seemed 90% of the listings were people getting rid of things much like they would at a garage sale, now 90%+ of the items listed are from commercial sellers trying to make a living off of e-bay.
This is fine and still useful if I am trying to find and buy a new part but the atmosphere of the whole thing now is like going to the mall versus going to a farm sale.

Thank's guy's. I reckon it's just a matter of whatever either party feels like doing at the end of the day. What is Right sure has changed a lot over this old man's lifetime.

Though I once bought items on ebay frequently (never sold anything) I haven't done any ebay business for about ten years.

Just too much trouble.

I just cancelled one yesterday. The buyer sent an email that he was bidding in the final seconds and wanted to raise his bid $11 and instead put $110 and it was to late to change. The item bought alot more than I thought but I still own it.I like to think the best about people and hope it was an honest mistake like I was told. I have another item that sold very well but the buyer has not paid for yet. I wonder if he ever will? I know if I relist the item it will make people wonder and it will sell for less. Tom

I buy and sell quite a bit on ebay and the only problem I have is non paying buyers. It happens all the time. It's a pain because you have to file to get your fees back. Some of their fees are ridiculous and you have to add the selling cost into your starting price. It has made selling on ebay very difficult. Anytime I list something big on ebay I also list it on Craig's list. I have far, far better luck on Craig's list and no fees.

should have just raised to next bid....if bid was at 10.5 and he wanted 11 and he put in 110 , it would have took money till he was top bidder

Kinda sad how it goes. I sell a few used parts on eBay.. Anymore I'm to the point that I use the buy-it-now to sell (and I try to accept what I feel is a fair price for both myself and my purchaser, but I almost always ask a few percent above what I will accept, as almost everyone wants to talk a seller down, even if the asking price is LOW), but, when I auction, I start all parts at either $9.99+shipping, or $15-25 with free shipping, and if the part is valued at $100 but gets only one bid, it is what it is. It's the risk I take as a seller. I don't want to lose money (and technically, I didn't lose money, because as my ag teacher used to say "unless you had the money in your hand you didn't lose it") but sometimes it happens.. As long as the buyer pays, it ships.

Also, for those that have never sold on eBay, they even charge their sales commission on what the buyer pays on shipping! We are supposed to only charge what it costs me to ship, but then they commission on that, which hits my bottom line! Sure I get a slight shipping discount.. But that is ate up by the commission! Then PayPal takes their cut too..
