A day in my life

I have a New Holland 6635, which is from Ireland or Italy, dont remember which. Anyway, last summer I broke out the upper rear window while mowing. Being a foreign tractor after market parts are somewhat hard to locate, and dealer are too expensive for me. After doing homework, and many, many phone calls I discovered the same window fits other tractors, even other brands. Bingo. I picked up the new window this morning and have it installed before noon. Back in business. After picking up my tools, etc. I walk out of the shop and look back, kinda proud of myself. As I turn to close the shop door my brand new, just installed, $145 window shatters. Nothing left bigger than a dime. GREAT!!!!!!!!! So back to plenty of fresh air in my cabbed tractor. This said "Safety Glass" on the window. I thought safety glass is not supposed to shatter like that.

Safety glass may refer to it being tempered glass. Tempered fractures into tiny little pieces, not shards like regular house glass. Laminated glass is what doesn't come apart. If its just flat glass, I have had laminated glass cut for cabs by a local glass shop before.

Any idea why it shattered? Safety glass IS supposed to shatter into small pieces so you don't get impaled by a large singular piece.

Use a straight edge to assess the flatness of the frame. stress can and will explode tempered glass, and crack laminated glass. It must be in close contour to the frame/chassis to avoid a repeat. Jim

Glass does react oddly sometimes. I've seen it happen with straight up plate glass in new wood windows made in the millwork shop at the lumber yard. When done, they would go up to the glazing shop to get glass installed. We had stack of freshly glazed sash leaning along a wall in the shop. I heard a distinct "ting", so I went over to the stack, and found one of the lites in a 6 over 6 sash had broken while it sat there.

Check your frame, make sure the glazing pocket is clear, nothing bent, protruding etc. I'm not sure if these assemblies use setting blocks, glazing tape or gaskets, but there has to be something.

If it is a panel type window you should be able to take it out and carry it to any glass shop and get tempered safety glass installed.

Get a piece of Lexan, (not Plexiglass), saw it, sand the edges, it will never break again!

This is what bullet proof windows are made from, indestructible but will scratch and sun bake. But if it's not a window you need to see clearly through, it will work.

Another solution is to have a glass shop make you a replacement and have it tempered. As long as the piece is flat (not curved), it should be less than $145. They can work from a cardboard pattern.

Forget GLASS, go to your local Plastic Supply and get a sheet of POLYCARBONATE cut to your window size. Polycarbonate is the same material that is used in Plastic SAFETY GLASSES. You just have to remember to NEVER wipe off the dust & dirt with a DRY rag, always use a WET rag or you will put tiny scratches in the plastic which over time will make the window blurry. Make sure that it's stamped "Polycarbonate". NEVER USE PLEXIGLASS!
