What type of payment?

What is the best way to have a buyer pay for items sold over Craigslist? For smaller stuff, cash seems best. But for $5K-10K range are money orders the way to go? How do you have them pay, assuming they show up in person?

From the things I see occasionally sending 4 times what was settled on to an off shore account in eastern Europe is the way to go.If you supply your bank account you can keep the extra.Just kidding - I have heard of people forging money orders so I can't say what is a safe way to do it. Maybe in today's world there isn't any way that is 100% safe.

At the Sheriff's office in the next county over they have a lighted area in the parking lot with video cameras rolling 24/7 so people can make transactions like off of CL
at minimum risk with cash.

On a $10,000 sale, I called the buyers bank with his OK and made sure the check was good, and it was!

Tough indeed, I'm not a banker so not sure I could spot a forged bank check or forged cash, unless it was printed like monopoly money maybe

I bought a tractor of CL that was a little pricey. I had them call my credit union for verification of funds and wrote them a check. Small town credit unions are easy to deal with.

For that amount, if you cannot do cash, do a wire transfer. A real wire transfer, not an 'ACH transaction'(I believe that is what it is called). JDSeller on this site is very familiar with them.

Actually in Idaho a bad check is a felony period it usually doesn't go that far but I watched a young mother in court that had written out several bad checks 25 bucks and less they let her go she did it again and she got sent up for 2 years

CASH. And ONLY cash. I bought a $3500 tractor last summer....seller and I agreed with cash (35 nice $100.00 bills). No muss, no fuss, no worries.

I sell plows...you want a plow show me the cash.

Banks won't loan money the way a lot of people do...why would you?
LA in WI

If I were SELLING on CL, after the buyer sees the merchandise, price is agreed, and if he was hesitant to bring cash, meet the person at their bank, let them draw the money and exchange it right there in the lobby.

If I were BUYING, I would not show up at a strangers location with any money! If, and only IF I were comfortable, we would go to my bank and draw the money. If it were a titled vehicle, I would have the title in hand and signed.

Sold a truck for my brother and took cash and many of the hundred-dollar-bills were actually good. Bank said many were counterfeit. I'd ALWAYS use one of those marker pens and check every bill. [In our case, we reported to the police and only got a long blank look....]

That is a tough one and I certainly agree many people will not bring around 3-30,000 in cash!!! Yes if dealing cash get a marker pen. Now a legitimate buyer will have no issue on giving you time to get a MO or wire transfere settled. I always was leary of the buyer that wanted to haul the item off asap!!! First see if the buyer wants it and what he wants to do. Next in my area we run in to social security and disability where the guy wants no income (ie no checks) so cash only. good luck just feel the situation out.

In 1998 I bought a 6 month old Loaded F-150 with 6,000 miles on it. I met the owner at my bank and they issued a cashiers check made out to her (she preferred that over cash).

Like Charlie M said about money orders, I sold an item some time back and was paid with a money order, went to the bank to deposit it and teller said people are now counterfitting these. Then she said wait here and I will run it thru the copy machine, she came back and said it was good becuz when she made a copy of it it said "copy" on it so it was made of official paper. Then she told me that the bank holds it for two days to make sure the money is there before it is available in your account.

Things are changing fast on all this, but anyhow at one time, the crooks learned they could make a copy of money orders, and send you the copy. If done right it would clear your bank.

Thrn they would cash the real check at the right time, and eventually the issuing bank would end up with 2 checks. Yours, being the copy, would be clawed back and you would lose the money, even tho your bank said it was good funds.

Hopefully safeguards are in place for that now, but..... It is a difficult situation.

Its hard to be a buyer as well, if you sellers think about it. Would -you- drive onto someone's strange property with $5000 cash in your pocket responding to an ad that says 'cash only'..... Boy are you set up to get your head bashed in and money stolen..... That is not a responsible seller either asking for that....... Crooks go both ways.

Do you know the original purchaser can stop payment on a money order? If they have the stub, they can get their money back and keep the M.O. Happened here, got a money order for a down payment on a car. had a stop payment out on it. Managers brother is chief deputy at the sheriffs office next door. The guys had some tall explaining to do. needless to say, the car was returned before they tore it up.

Because that camera is going to do you a lot good when they take your money and beat your head in. Although it might be a hit on YouTube.

People rob and steal all the time knowing they are being recorded.

Cash and a 1911A1.

My bank won't call on a check. They say it can be good now and cancelled an hour later.

They've been doing it quite awhile with no problems, can't see someone committing robbery while the sheriff's dispatcher is watching and is only about 75 yards away. What
safer place do you buy and sell?
