Township truck just went by pulling a drag/scarifier rig to smooth out pot holes instead of having the road grader do this job. I wonder if this will save $$ , they have several snow plough trucks that can pull these drags. First time I have seen this rig, seems like a good idea. Bruce

Think I'll send a pic to my township
maybe ask em to park it here and I'll smooth out the road for the as I live smack in the middle of 2km's gravel rd they hardly grade
everything for 15 km's around me is paved
sounds like a good idea to me but think it'll go over like a lead ballon

They have been making and selling those for a number of years now. I've never seen one in operation. They make them garden tractor size and larger.

I have seen them used behind farm tractor, pickup trucks and behind dump trucks like your picture they do a good job on pot holes but they suck on wash boards. Blue water massey's comment made me think of an old guy the lived near my parents on a dead end road the township would not grade the road or put any stone on it one time they did spread some stone he got in his car ran the township worker down gave him a hand full of stone and told they guy I think you messed up you put down 20 stones and I know that you only wanted to put down 10. He didn't get any more stone for over two years after that. He did say it was worth it though

Local township got one last spring--called a road plane. Works good where there is good gavel to move around. Hilltop by neighbors is lacking gravel and had bad potholes all year--quite a few spots like that. They only used the grader 3 times all year. IMHO they should use the road plane 3 times and then once with the grader.

Our county has a couple that they pull behind farm tractors.

They have their place, but they're not a cure-all. They tend to smooth the surface but not cut deep enough to cure serious problems.

Of 16 road maintainers our county has, we always have a couple equipped with "Sandvik" blades. They're like regular grader blades with 2" teeth. They do a pretty good job of breaking up washboarding, etc., and breaking up a compacted surface into workable product.

most townships around here have one.
they are faster to use than grader for just routine maintenance.
then a couple of times a year will use the maintainer

Seems like it would take the crown out of the road, or make it impossible to put crown in an otherwise flat road. Can't believe they don't have an underbody on their truck.

If the conditions are right it will work. Needs to be a little on the wet side to get the gravel and wet dirt to bond. With a drying day the operator will be a hero! if it rains slow after working it wet you will have a sloppy, slushy mess. Too dry and the wash boards will be back after the 3rd vehicle. Still going to need the grader to keep the weeds cut off the edges and to keep the crown of the road in check. It will save some hours on the grader thats for sure but in hot dry conditions the grader will have the advantage.Any way thats what works for us in nebraska!
