For the Forum Police...

That's funny. Now I agree if you're talking about us old fa##s on this forum. We're doing the best we can. Don't need the criticism. But I disagree if you're talking about the local high school, when they post on their sign; "Girls Bassketbal Tonight."

I got a bigger kick out of the last few lines of it. Anybody who believes this first line has never been in a bar in their lives. lol
The Dutch study reminds me of somebody at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

" Another disputes the classic saying, "Nice guys finish last" by showing that women actually tend to prefer unattractive, considerate guys to hot jerks. And one Dutch study shows narcissistic dinguses tended to have received excessive praise as children.

I four on am sic n tared of spelling polc! Wen im out on my old alice chambers an the hidrolics go ot I don want someon staning ther telln me my spel aint so good! cant u c that. where where u born aneway!!!

Good grammar is a good thing. Good diction is also a good thing. In construction there is a lot of verbal communication as there is in other careers also. When talking to co workers, contractors, and architects I try to be clear in my sentence form and diction. Sometimes it doesn't go well. I tell my guys that half of the English language is listening. Too often I see where the person I'm talking to has created a visual image in his mind that he is familiar with from past experiences and not necessarily accurate to the project we are dealing with. That can be a tough bridge to cross. I've been tripped up by Architects who lable something to be "demoed" when they actually meant "salvaged".

Unfortunately we are seeing more where the numbers don't work either. When the Architectural, Structural, and Mechanical dimension don't carry through it gets to be a mess.

Grammar is affected by the dialect from the area so I typically don't get to excited. I grew up in a neighborhood where the dialect was a mixture of English, German, and Polish. Ha! I can't find most of those words in any dictionary.

I don't come here to check folks spelling or there grammar. I come here to socialize and read there stories and tell stories with folks that i can understand and they understand me. I am 56 years old I cherish older folks stories and knowledge. Because when there gone there gone young folks cant seem to grasp that concept. I dont care how they spell it as long as i understand it. And i dang sure wouldn't say something to embarrass or degrade somebody because they spelled a word wrong. So grammar police go somewhere else

Yeah, like water facets, egg youlks, kews. parbly. (faucets, egg yolks, cows, probably) Oh yeah, forgot "Oh fiddlesticks!", too. I was in high school before I stopped calling cows, kews. Lol! Prednear, for pretty near. Still use that one. Foxworthy would have a field day!

I think there would be less typos if the edit function worked. Sometimes errors are not perceived by the writer until it is posted.
Not everyone has an eagle eye and even eagles miss sighting prey. My wife was an editor and it takes a particular learned mindset to check for typos first while ignoring content and grama.

Yes, that was deliberate. Where was I born? In a barn of course.

Naw thet thar iz phunny.

This study just confirmed something that most of us already knew.

Same people who refer to a "working man/woman" as a "mouth breather". Coming from someone who has never did anything that would require "mouth breathing", it's really a compliment. It's quite common among politicians .

My feeling on this subject is that we should do as well as we possible can and not be critical of anothers inability. I see nothing redeeming or humorus in butchering the english language. What we certainly need to be is an example to our young people whether it be in our appearance, language that we use, how we treat others, daily hygiene or a dozen other things that we do to form our character. I am a great believer that if one wants to be successful, one needs to look successful and conduct themselves in a manner that is a tribute to their profession. The Good Lord knows that I have failed in many ways but I still get up in the morning and give everything my best shot. There is something to be said to do the best you can do with what you have to work with. Being married to a school teacher has been extremely helpful and a blessing to me and someday I may even be able to graduate from the third grade. I have a long way to go but that goal is out there.

There is no excuse for not running the spell checker and re-reading the text before posting. To catch and correct a majority of the spelling and grammar errors.

My computer doesn't have spell check anymore. It is 13 years old and had to be revived , so until I get a new one you get what you get. I feel lucky to be able to get on the forum as it is.

I used to enjoy correcting friends' grammar and spelling.
Then I realized I enjoyed having friends more.

There's a difference between being a grammar nazi/jerk and doing what the study asked:

People were "[i:654c4848f0]asked to read emails with typos, evaluate the writer's personality and level of intelligence, and then evaluate themselves on the 5 Big Personality Traits: extraversion, agreeability, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness.[/i:654c4848f0]" Responding to that question, as part of a study, is different from flaming a guy publicly on his spelling/grammar.

Of more interest to me, how much of my tax money went to funding this study?

Also, according to my spell checker, nazi, extraversion, agreeability, and neurotocism are misspelled. They probably want "nazi" to be capitalized, but the other three came from the brainiacs that figured out how to pry my tax money out of the government. They're way smarter than I, and those words look OK to me so I'm guessing they're also smarter than the person who wrote the spell-checker software.

I appreciate Tom O'Connor's attitude on this subject, and echo the thought that the edit function would help most of us. The spell check that points out potential errors is far superior to the function that auto-corrects perceived errors.

One of my roles at work is to proof the electronic log entries by our shift for content and accuracy, then approve it as permanent. One of the words that is always shown as an error is my own last name. Even the computer recognizes that I just don't belong :(

While I don't get my shorts in a bunch over grammatical and spelling errors on this board, I do challenge the attitude of some that good English is unimportant and unnecessary. I see a careless attitude about language as a reflection of a general abandonment of any kind of standards. In my lifetime I have seen the development of a mindset that a societal standard is pointless and useless; the only thing that matters is "....what I want to do. What difference does it make if I wear my work clothes to church, or my ball cap, shorts and wife-beater shirt at the restaurant table, if I cuss loudly in public, if I wear an obscene T-shirt in public, if I play my music too loud?"

Taken idividually these are small, relatively insignificant things, but collectively they reflect a disturbing attitude that the lowest common denominator is just fine. It's kinda like the Broken Window Theory--not being conscientious about the little things leads to a cheapening, coarsening mindset in all aspects of social interaction.

My 90 year old mother, who was a teacher, was all upset today because she say a spelling and grammar mistake on TV today....

I have never corrected a persons grammar or spelling that has posted on this site. I have read many posts on here that were quite cryptic and very hard to decypher. I try my best to understand the post and answer the question if I have anything valuable to add. If not, I just pass over the post and move on to the next one.

But, I have on multiple times corrected someones grammar or spelling when they were being critical of another persons spelling, then screwed up in their own rebuttal.

I myself have had errors in my posts. I dont use spell check and I should. I like to use the classic view which doesn't have a spellcheck handy. Also I havent figured out a way to edit in classic view.

I am going to have to chime in with O'Connor on this one, even if I do question if his last name is spelled correctly.

I like to think I am not a jerk more often than the next guy, but I really think we should take the same pride in our language that the Hispanic crowd does (referring to how we have to now be a bilingual country).

GordoSD,

Did you believe I would type an entry on the subject of grammar without leaving something of contention?
You win the prize for finding that kernel.

"I myself" is grammatically correct, yet many English scholars frown on its use. It is considered reflexive.
My English teacher was strict about not using "I myself".
By using it every chance I get, it's my little smirk back at her.

You appear unable to or worse yet, unwilling to make note of the term "most" in the post.
Please Mr English Major. Tell us how that last sentence is so sinfully and totally incomplete.

I have to agree with Rick, it's disgusting the number of people who don't have a clue that think they need to add words to sound smarter.

"Would you rather help your Uncle, Jack, off a horse....or help your uncle jack off a horse?"

Or help your uncle jack, off a horse...

It has no verb.....catch and correct are both in the infinitive form. Had you not included the period after the word posting, you would have received an A plus.

I remember you posting about spell check and people being too lazy to use it but then at a later date I was surprised to see you had misspelled words in your posts . I guess you don't spell check every time?

(quoted from post at 16:19:09 04/08/16) Yeah a typo can be annoying but big whoop if the point gets across... it's a forum not the newspaper! :)

Agreed, The English language is made up of broken pieces of many other languages, and the American version is even worse. The proper use is just an opinion, someone decided that it should be used or said a certain way. There, their, they're ( ) is nothing wrong with being consistent but the proper use could be regional, it's not like math that is based on logic and never changes. So many people that get hung up on correct grammar have a hard time with math. When I go to the bank with a business plan the banker doesn't give me an English or spelling test but he does ask to see my math.

Sorry DB, but you spelled "label" incorrectly. You spelled it "lable."

Correct spelling, correct usage of words (words mean things), correct punctuation, etc., can help increase the understanding of ideas. For example, Jack and his horse. If Jack is elderly, or for whatever reason needs assistance to dismount his horse, most people would aid him. But if Jack and his horse are perverts, well, they are on their own. They're probably capable of doing their thing out there in the pasture, alone.

See the different spellings and different meanings of the words that sound the same?

My last name is Webb, and it really irks me when some knucklehead misspells my name as "Web," and then wants to tell me that I spell it incorrectly!

When attempting to share an idea or deliver a message to someone, a person should attempt to be as accurate as possible with their language, both written and spoken, in order to convey the correct idea or message.

The AVERAGE high school grad should be able to spell correctly. Grammar and sentence structure starts at home. That said, not all of us are born with the ability to attain a high level of correctness in this subject. I know several dyslexics who are very intelligent but their brain isn't wired to process the written word correctly. I come from a post graduate educated family. I grew up with parents who used good sentence structure. We did not yell, we did not swear, we were proper. Spelling came easy for me in school. Regretfully I have lost some of it through the years. A close neighbor family with 8 kids also was a proper acting family. The mother in that family won the Nebraska state spelling contest. All of the kids in that family were smart as a whip and went on to achieve at least a four year college education. NONE of them could spell worth a hoot! Some of them have gone on to have a business of their own but they rely on the secretary to do the spelling.

I will never correct bad spelling on this forum. If at a weak moment I do correct someone, give me a good slap! I am not perfect so why should I criticize others?

Are you saying there is no need to run the spell check function?
