R.I.P Merle Haggard

Dallas Morning News writer Chuck Carlton: By dying on his 79th birthday, the great Merle Haggard leaves us like the subject of a Merle Haggard song. RIP. Glad I got to see "the Hag" play twice at the Capital Music Hall in Wheeling WV back a dozen or so years go. The country legends are getting scarce anymore.

I like his music and carry his tapes in my truck and play them all the time. May he rest in peace.

Godspeed, Merle - Rest in Peace.

We have a "modest" outdoor venue near us, and Merle played there about 6 years ago. Son and I went, great show. Son was the editor of the local newspaper at the time, and asked Merle's manager if he could interview the man after the show. Sure, said he, just come to the bus (and pointed out which one). As the show wound down, Merle left the stage, band played on, Merle came back for a curtain call, then left again, band played on. Son waiting until the end for his interview. Suddenly, while band still playing, bus roared to life and away it went. Son and I looked at each other and started laughing- there goes your interview, son. Run fast, maybe you can catch up. . .

Listening to Merle's 40 greatest hits on the way to and from work for the next few days. RIP Hag.

I heard that today. On his birthday of all days. Heard he had been battling pneumonia for an extended period of time. I've seen him a few times over the years. I remember the first time that I saw him, whoever introduced him up on stage introduced him as "Merle F-ing Haggard". I sure am sorry to hear it.

Merle, may you R.I.P. always and forever.

Mark

I was riding down to Dallas thr Muskogee that day. My son mentioned the town and the singer, although he was not sure who he was. When we got to the motel that night, his woman called and mentioned that Merle had died. Coming back the next day we stopped at a convenience store south of Muskogee and I picked up a Muskogee paper that had dedicated the first section the to the "Hag".
