HAVE A 2840 THAT HAD PROBLEMS. TURNS OUT MINOR SO FAR. LUCKY I GUESS. COME TO FIND OUT TRANSMISSION FILTER SCREEN WAS TOTALLY STOPPED UP. THIS I SUPPOSE STARVED OIL TO THE TRANSMISSION PUMP WHICH STARVED THE MAIN HYDRAULIC PUMP OF OIL. MAIN HYDRAULIC PUMP WAS RUINED. I CLEANED THE TRANSMISSION SCREEN, REPLACED MAIN HYDRAULIC PUMP AND ALL HYDRAULICS RETURNED TO PROPER WORKING ORDER WHEN RUNNING IN LOW ON HI/LO SHIFTER. WHEN SHIFTED TO HI THE TRACTOR BOGS DOWN LIKE THE MOTOR IS UNDER HEAVY LOAD LOSING POWER. SEEMS SOMETHING IS BOUND UP. NOT SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS BUT FEEL LIKE SOMETHING IS GOING TO BREAK IF I SHIFT TO HI MUCH MORE. OIL BLOCKAGE, BROKEN PRESSURE REGULATING SPRING NOT SURE WHAT TO LOOK AT ANY IDEAS OUT THERE?

Surprised the front pump failed . The JD area of this site is a better place to ask. There are ports on the transmission to measure clutch apply pressure . What was the material in the filter ? Please type in lower case text.

I had the same problem develop with my 2940. As it was under a 100 hour warranty the dealer flushed out the shavings and cleaned everything prior to replacing the hydraulic fluid. Only 20 hours later the same problem returned, and this time I asked them to examine the rear end, also. Bingo; the right brake was worn to the point that it was grinding metal shavings. The dealer took a real loss on this.

Totally drained the hydraulic oil and flushed with diesel fuel. Filled with new JD hydraulic oil and will change again after a few hours of running. I believe the water came from the shifter boots being cracked.

Your brakes will "seem" fine but my guess is they are metal to metal,,and things are going to get much worse,,as for the hi/low issue you probably have low transmission pressure and it is not releasing the low clutch as it goes to hi range,, the metal and crapp that plugged your screen also ruined your transmission pump....you are about to open Pandora's Box....

Tim - I currently have the opposite problem with my 2240. It works fine in H, but bogs the engine when in L. I flushed everything, and replaced
the brakes. I have been just using it in H, but I need to figure out what is actually wrong.

You will find you are just starting a journey on this JD 2840. Once they have hydraulic issues, like you have, they will continue until you either give up or completely clean and repair the entire system front to back.

Water will not usually plug the transmission screen. It is usually brake lining material from worn out brakes. If you stop right away when you FIRSAT have trouble you some times will get lucky and not have to do more than fix the brakes and flush the system. If you run it until other things quit working like the main pump then your screwed.

I worked on these tractors for years at the first dealership I worked at. They had sold 58 JD 2840s. More than any other model they ever sold. I have seen 5-6 in the shop at the same time with hydraulic problems.

This is the reason JD 2840s sell cheap. People are afraid of the costly repairs if the hydraulic start acting up.
