Hi, question. I have a 26hp briggs on my sears mower. I replaced the v regulator on it some time back.maybe 2 or 3 yrs. Now the battery is going week again and I have to recharge it. Do these regulators give up often ? How do I test it? I have a new alternator on hand if need be. The v regulator is pretty cheap on ebay like $10. Ed Will Oliver BC

I would think a bad battery would be the most common. Put a voltmeter on the battery, it should have over 12 v, then start the engine and run it up to half throttle, the voltage should go to near 14 in a short time.

Use a volt meter to check the charging voltage at the battery with the engine at 1/2 throttle. Should be around 14 volts. Also use a hydrometer
to check the specific gravity in each battery cell. Should be around 1.275 and if one cell has a low reading replace the battery. Hal

if this is the briggs engine I think it is some times they act like the battery is weak or low when the actual problem is valve adjustment causing the compression release to not work right and the engine does not want to turn over when trying to start it. you may want to check this out. leroy

Hi , I know what you mean. I didn't know there was a decompression feature on my Briggs but if the battery is not right up to snuff some times it will hesitate to spin over. I hit the start position a couple of times and it will go but my wife will just hold the key on start and in a moment it will spin. It starts readily. But if battery is a little low neither method works. Do you think I should adjust valves? Is it like adjusting tappets? Ed Will Oliver BC thanks

If it is a vertical shaft engine, make sure you don't have gasoline in your oil. Over the years, I have seen people replace batteries, regulators and starters when the problem was fuel washing the cylinder down because a leaking carb needle, caused by ethynol gunk.
