Woodpeckers

Just like last spring, there's a big woodpecker pounding away at a trim board outside the bedroom every morning around 6am. He's already made a hole about two inches across. Last year when I repaired the damage I verified that the wood is solid, so he's not looking for bugs, just for a nice resonant place to knock. I don't like repeatedly doing carpentry twenty feet up in the air, so does anyone know whether replacing the board with something like Azek would make it less attractive to our little friend?

Your little friend is only trying to attract a girlfriend. Leave him alone!!

Seriously though, I have the same problem, but he's banging away on the downspout. I used to get up and cuss him away, but he kept coming back until his lady saw him for what he was. Then they happily flew off into the sunset, or sunrise.

we had one that would peck on our cover on the TV signal booster he would do it so much it would mess up the TV and the cover was plastic. Boy would that sound get any other woodpeckers to try and out do him it was neat to listen to butt it would tick you off when watching the morning news

Had a great-aunt who had that problem. She liked birds (always lots of bird feeders out - sunflower seeds, suet, cracked corn, etc.), but she had limits, too. Her solution was a .22 rifle.

Problem here went away when we resided house with vinyl siding and all exposed wood trim with aluminum trim.

Except the pecker head that decided to hammer on an empty overhead fuel tank. Could sure get that thing resonating.

We used to have one hammering away on the ball on the end of the ridge cap just above my bedroom window. Their little brain must be well packaged in their skull to take that kid of banging. I've never seen one knock itself unconscious. LOL

Tape a picture of nnalert up there, it 'll scare the heck out of him. I Use em on the corn crib to keep the racoons out. Works good. ;-)

Yep, We had one that tried to destroy the corner of the house. The painter told my wife that he couldn't decide whether the woodpecker did the most damage or her husbands 12gauge but we no longer have woodpecker problems.

They have a sac filled with fluid in their head that acts as a shock absorber. I used to think they were pretty stupid to bang away on a metal wagon box. A friend told me they do it to get attention for mating purposes making as much noise as possible.
