On my 2001 Chevy duramax I took it in the other day to get a power steering leak fixed the mechanic I think he said something about taking the down pipe off the turbo to get more room now when it revs up it does not whistle very loud at all like it use to you can kind of hear a sucking noise now the truck has plenty of power and runs fine just sounds different should I be concerned or just run it?

He is talking about the big aluminum pipe on the drivers side of the engine. It should have blue hoses on each end, one connects to the turbo outlet, the other to the charge air cooler. It would be worth a look to make sure the hoses aren't rolled and that the clamps are tight. They should have big heavy clamps with a nut and spring. A Duramax runs like crap and blows black smoke if the CAC pipes come off.

I can't see them taking the down pipe off for that. The down pipe is the exhaust outlet leaving the turbo and going to the tail pipe at the back of the engine behind the turbo. If it was off you would have loud exhaust noise, more than likely a loud turbo whistle noise and exhaust fumes in the truck, and probably not any power problems.

The hot side charge CAC (charge-air-cooler) tube runs close to the P/S pump and lines though. If this tube was loose, leaking or off you should hear a hissing type air noise, and a significant loss of power. Its possible that one of the silicone hoses that connect the tube has a hole or is loose though.
