Even stranger than last week

If a helicopter landing in the field a week ago wasn't odd enough,I thought I was just going to be a witness to an airliner crash. I went and took a bale out, looked toward town, and there was an airliner flying low and slow over town. I don't mean a charter jet,it was a big airliner! That thing was lower and slower than most single engine planes fly. The nose was up like it was trying to climb. It was so close I could see some exhaust from it. It curved a little to the southwest and gained a little altitude, started picking up some speed. It got behind the barn and I lost sight of it. We're right in a major flight pattern here, but they all go east and west, not north and south.

I'm starting to think things that disappear in the Bermuda Triangle are coming out here. Maybe it's got to do with them tearing down the old milk plant. LOL

Sure was quite a scare though. The wife saw mw through the front door and came outside to see what was going on. She said I had a look of terror on my face. I thought for sure that thing was coming down.

Man I don't know what changed in the atmosphere, but lately they go by way up in the air and about blow your ear drums out, some I can't even see, sure had me looking around for some low flying jets. I think they are moving around to miss each other after looking at the flight watch, but man alive they are loud.

Ever had your shop used as a "target" in a B52 practice bombing run while you were standing in the doorway?

Or Hilary trying to see if there's any lead in Pearl Lake that she can blame on Governor Snyder.

I thought it was strange yesterday, I saw 2 military choppers, one a twin rotor, and one fast single rotor model. Both going east. I don't see military aircraft very often here.

I walked out the back door at work on an overcast day and watched a big jet drop out of the clouds in a turn no higher than 1000 feet. He throttled up and recovered but I suspect he was trying to get below the clouds and didn't realized he was so low. I was waiting for the thud, for sure.

One of the local kids was a Military pilot, and he'd occasionally give our town a private air show, coming in low and fast, or low and slow, depending on what he was flying. He came lumbering over in some kind of huge plane one Sunday morning, and I thought it was gonna crash into the big oak in the front yard. I looked out the farrowing house door, and the shadow of that thing looked like it was 150' wide. After he got over the town, he did a "wing wave" and I said there goes Vernon - darn kid is gonna kill himself yet. Now he flies for either Fed-Ex or UPS, can't remember which. His wife flies for the opposite one.

Made me wonder if that was what was going on here. It wasn't storming at the time, but it's been cloudy all day. Started storming shortly after. I don't know that Sheridan's much of a land mark though.

Years ago the military had a run with 3 older aircraft, training the reserve I believe they would fly over once a week or so, pretty low, one big cargo and two smaller maneuverable planes.

Was fall and the time changed, was out plowing at dusk and these 3 planes show on the horizon, saw their lights more than the planes it was late enough. All of a sudden their course changed, and they ended up flying right over the top of me.

Was a little eerie being the target of a military operation!

Last week was driving up the hill out of the river bottom of the town here, just as I coasted to a stop at the top of the hill my pickup engine sounded horrid. Something was wrong, all choppy! Shut the radio off and tried to get my bearing - here a big millitary 2 propeller chopper was flying over town, heading to a fly by of the airport near where I was. Man what a racket, and unnerved me, thought the pickup was dying.

Several years ago I was over at my sisters 5 acres planting corn with the little 1720 tractor and a 4 row planter. Again, the engine just started sounding aweful, a bad thumping could feel it in my chest, really bad deal. Oh jeez, so far from home, now what? Shut the tractor off, and still felt and heard the thumping. There, on the other side of a row of trees, went the unit train..........

Before they closed Griffis Airforce Base here in Rome, NY we used to see B52s flying at tree top level. Quite the sight. Rome is about 50 miles away and we were in the approch/takeiff pattern. A few years back someone was also flying arial mapping. Big 4 engine prop planes. They were pretty noisey as well. Now all we see are the guys in helos looking for wacky weed in the fall. and the regular helo flights over the pipeline that is just north of us and army reserve flights to and from Camp Drumb during the summer.

I'm used to the helicopters. I'm a mile from the hospital and the Aeromed chopper flies right over my house when they take off. They circle just to the north or south on their way in,depending on which way the wind's blowing.

They used to that with this house. You could stand in the front door and watch em come straight at you.

Rick.

I used to have a couple of A-10 pilots out of Fort Drum that got a kick out of using me for targeting practice while I was chopping hay. Those A-10's come in real quiet anyway and those guys would sneak up on me just over the tree tops and then accelerate away right over the top of me. Would just about shake you out of the tractor seat. They would circle around and make another pass, wave at you and then peel off to find another target. I'd just wave back. Then some sourpuss griped about the low level passes and the pilots were no longer allowed to practice on civilians at tree top level. I kinda missed it myself. We are about 50 miles north of Griffiss and right on the flight path to Plattsburg AF base and would see a lot of B-52 traffic here also.

Didn't say nnalert on the side did it? My nephew farms about 30 miles east of Dubuque Iowa. nnalert had some big rally in Dubuque at the time and he said if the plane was just a little lower he thinks he could of counted the rivets in it's belly when it went over the farm.

That's a good one. We had a young pilot flying for the local pesticide guy and he got fired because he was careless. He got another applicator job and within a few weeks he did crash a spray plane. Years later his mother was a resident at the nursing home my wife worked at and said he ended up flying for Eastern Airlines.

Where I live in south jersey I am about 8 miles as the crow flies from a county air port. The local State Trooper helo is stationed there. It is called South Star. Fun to see them go over now and then. They do air evac.

Used to run the logging roads near here in a Baja buggy. Had an attack helicopter chase us around on several occasions. We probably made a good target for them to practice following and sneaking up on. Quite the shock to come around a corner in the mountains and have a black chopper coming at you just above the trees! Quite the sight and sensation.
I can tell you, I NEVER want one of them Mad at Me!!! One burst and you would be no more!!

I live two blocks from the biggest regional hospital. The Flight for Life choppers are supposed to use the Missippi as a corridor but fly at 150 feet above the roofs to the dismay of all neighbors. Some times they sound like they are coming in one window and out the other. Jim

Years ago my Dad and my brother were baling hay, Dad on tractor and brother on wagon, near a gas transmission pipeline and a guy making his weekly inspection flight (fixed wing aircraft) over the pipeline seemed to get a kick out of "buzzing" guys on the ground. He came in so low that my brother "hit the deck" on the wagon. Funny thing, Dad was nearly deaf and was looking away from the approaching plane, heard something and quickly turned and looked the other way, and never did see the plane!

we get FedEx planes doing that a 2 time a year slow and da- low first time i saw it i said o shi= nose up tail down but no real jet engine noise ???????????

There is a plane that flies over my house at tree top level from time to time.
Sounds like a bigger plane than a crop duster but he flies a crop duster pattern back and forth.
Always flies over at night so I never get to see it.
First couple of times I was wondering what they were doing.
Then I realized it's the parish spraying for mosquitoes.

Randy,
If you would have looked up flight aware.com you could have got the N number of the plane, altitude, origination, destination, speed and everything about it as any airliner would be on a instrument flight plan and landings.com will tell you who the plane is registered to. Hope this helps in the future. Tom

There comin for ya !!!! Haven't been making any anti external_link posts on any other sites have you?!?!?👹👹👹

C5A's were stationed near here and they look like they are just hanging there on approach. Low and slow.

The bigger the airplane the slower it will "appear" to go. Has to do with the length of time it takes to travel its own length. A small jet going the same speed will appear to zip right along. Hard to convince folks of that but that's the way it works.
