Is it worth it?

This is my dream tractor. I've always wanted a Ford 4000 pretty much exactly like this. I really don't know anything about select-o-speeds but I've always wanted one.
I've also always wanted it to be row crop. Of course I would have to go check it out but what do you guys think? Is it worth $2700?

I would say it's probably worth it. Some here will say to RUN away from a Select-O-Speed transmission, but I've had a couple, and liked them. That is a 2nd generation SOS, which is a plus. Tires look a bit worn, but OK yet. Make sure it shifts right after warming up, power steering works and doesn't leak, and the correct drawbar is in place. Those deep-drop drawbars are kinda hard to find, and usually over $100 when you do find them.

Your money if you think you want a slect-o-speed go for it. Personally I would consider it two day from a boat anchor. It the transmission shoots crap tractor is not worth fixing or you will have a high price 4000, but then there also are not a lot of folks looking for a narrow front 4000. If you buy it he will be lucky he found the right man. My part of the country good Saturday morning auction that is a $2800 dollar tractor at best.

I have a neighbor with a Ford 5000 sos trans, and he loves it. He had one of each (SOS and gear drive) he sold the gear drive and kept the SOS. I thought he was crazy, but it was his decision. He had both over 30 yrs. It has been trouble free. He did buy a new kubota, and said it was the worst move he made. It always has something wrong with it. There will never be another kubota on that farm.

I wouldt pay more then that but if its what you want go for it. I always liked the looks of those narrow fronts. You dont see them much.

If you want a tractor with something much better than a Ford SOS (POS), get a JD Power Shift. Way more dependable, and parts are still available. Same concept, just a more reliable unit.

Worth it no question.
Had an 801 with the sos as a kid loved it.
Made a sweet loader tractor and we used it for field work as well.

Tracto-man,your money do as you please. If I remember right, you are 14 years old. Lot of guys will try to talk you out of an sos trans in a ford. Have had one for ten years [5000] and it is a great tractor. Friend of mine owned it since it was new. Always worked hard and put up wet. Was always serviced when it was due. Have not ran it in a couple of years because the shift cable and shifter were damaged by some young vandals. Still waiting for them to pay up. Due to get out of jail in a couple of months. I would offer him a lot less, all he can say is no. Buy a newer one for not much more than he is asking for that one. If I was closer I would be willing to help you out. Oregon is a long way from you. Listen carefully to some of these other old guys and you will learn a lot. Good Luck.

We had the second gen SOS on a Commander 6000 back in the early 70s. Never really had any problems with it, just a leaky seal between it and the rear end occasionally. You'll like the SOS if you get a good one. Only thing I like better is a hydrostatic transmission.

My brother had a 4000 gear and always wished I'd been able to buy it from him when he decided to move to Florida. It would be the perfect size for us now. I had just bought a new small tractor a couple of years ago and couldn't afford a very nice 3600 diesel I saw at a sale last year that just had the head reworked.

if it works, very fair price.
Narrow front Fords are pretty scarce around here and always bring top dollar.

Me? I'd talk him down as much as I could...if I could..
buy it, bring it home, service it, and enjoy it.
I'd also keep my eye out and start collecting the parts I needed
to switch it to a 5-speed. Throw the parts in the shed....no worries.
If the SOS never fails...cool. If it does fail, I'm ready.
(Buying parts when you [b:5ba697f573]have[/b:5ba697f573] to have em is always more expensive......)

round here it would be worth it. Try and drive it. Make sure all gears work. Especially neutral and the two reverses. When in Park make sure it doesn't move. Don't ever start one from the ground. By the way, it should not start if out of Park.

So if he's getting it for the asking price of 2700 or less he'd be doing alright, is that what you're saying?
