Last I heard over 70,000 acres burned. Wind was blowing hard from the SW and switched to the West, and then North so I hope that has helped things out. Bob

I'm 3 miles east of Wichita and for a short while it was so smokey you couldn't hardly breath. We had wind gusts in Wichita at 47 MPH. Right now (9:45 PM)the wind is shifting to the north but still windy. It may help the fire fighters. With all the fires going on down here in northwest KS they are having a blizzard. I-70 is/was closed up by Goodland KS.

About 4:30 driving home from Hesston to Goessel it was about a mile visibility with all the smoke even though it would be over 80 miles from the fire. We actually got paged due to the 911 calls from folks thinking the fire was in our area. This evening another fire started north of Burrton and two of our trucks went there for mutual aid. Dry conditions and 50 mph wind is a bad combination.
