Vacaction Spot on Gulf, Destin or Gulf Shores

OT. Anyone had any good experiences along the gulf coast in recent years? We're looking for a place to visit in possibly Destin area or Gulf Shores. Anyone got any hot spots that wont break the bank down that way? Never been to the area but want to try it. Thanks.
 
Recommend Gulf Shores. I was in Destin last year and it has gotten extremely crowded. The traffic was horrible. If you go that way, I'd recommend SeaSide, or WaterColor which is further down. Traffic can still be an issue to some extent, but there is a lot more to do within walking distance.
 
We went to Gulf Shores 6 years ago in June, wife and daughters idea on the month. Pretty white sand beach but I'm convinced it had to be hotter than hell.

2 things wrong with the gulf coast of Fla.

Spring......
All the college kids on spring break.
It can get so crazy even law enforcement can not keep up.

Summer......
Hotter than hell warmed over even if you are use to deep south heat.

Fall....
I find fall is the best time to go.
 
What is you and your better half like to do? My wife and I have a condo in Tarpon Springs, north of Clearwater/Tampa/St. Pete. It's not terribly touristy, not much in the way of beaches, but in a few minutes you can get down to Clearwater if that's what you like. Not real crowded but there are plenty of Greek restaurants and other touristy stuff to keep you busy.

We took a drive up to Cedar Key last fall. That was like taking a trip back 20 or 30 years: no high-rise hotels, mostly a fishing village.
 
We go to gulf shores and love it. Its nice and clean. Stayed in FT morgan but its a little ways from town.
 
I've been to both and prefer Gulf Shores near Fort Morgan. If you go to Gulf shores I would rent a house for a week. It's not too expensive if you get another couple involved. Fort Morgan Realty helps people rent homes in the area. You won't regret a beach front house. Try to go down on a Friday and spend the night. If you go down on a Saturday when everybody else gets there it's really busy, Fish the pier if you like fishing or just visit the pier, it's worth it.
