Wife and I ate in a restaurant last evening. Across the aisle was a couple with FIVE kids, the oldest looked like earlier teens, all got large platefuls. When they left they had hardly eaten half of what they got. Even saw a sandwich that hadn't been touched. I wondered what their bill was. I grew up taught not to waste food.

I know what you mean. The wife and I took a load of cattle to the sale barn today. We stopped at McDonalds on the way home. I handed her a 20 and went in the bathroom. When I came out,she handed me a five and two ones. The gal told us to go ahead and sit down and she'd bring it out to us. She brought out two burgers and two drinks, asked if she could get us anything else. I said ya,the fries. She looked at the slip and said we didn't order combos. We had to pay more for the fries. I had $2 left out of a 20.

At least it don't sound like you got sick for your $25. There's a new Portillo's in Rockford Il. we like to go to, neat place like an old time drive in, we've been to two of them in Chicago too. We ate there a couple of weeks ago on our way home, wife got sick before we got home and I woke up in the middle of the night sick as a dog. We both had the same exact thing except the drinks.

Most of the restaurant stuff is pre-cooked frozen crap anyway....we rarely go out because we are generally disappointed at the cost and quality. We can eat much cheaper at home and know what goes into our food. I do like going to a Chinese buffet that is near here....$16 for the two of us, $19 w/tip. Go in, fill up, leave....faster than the burger joints and lots of variety.

Its not just food.... I went to an audiologist today. Got my ears tested. The Dr said I needed hearing aids, which I knew. Tried some on. Then she told me they would cost near $6400. I could pay cash for them but I think that is way too much for a couple of hearing aid. Ive thought about it all day and I've concluded that I don't need to hear that bad. So Im going to decline the offer.

I know what you mean... We were at Springcreek BBQ last week. It's a buffet style chain. Pretty good for a chain restaurant, costs about $17.00 a person.

There was a birthday party going on, probably 15 kids, age 10 and up, so no kid meals, and about 6 adults. Looking at their clothes and mannerisms, none of the families appeared have an abundance of funds. Doing some quick math, the meal and cake and a hand full of gifts probably set them back close to $500! I realize this was a special occasion, but how can they do it?

That's CHEAP! I've heard of folks paying that much EACH.

I wonder what they actually cost to make?

I don't know how folks can go to work every day and SCREW people in need like that.

Steve@Advance- WOW!

I've never gone out to eat and sit and view others as to whether they could afford their meal/s or not. Let alone, counting the number of adults and guessing the kids ages or their quality of clothing.

Then, to sit and ponder the total amount of the meal and wonder how they could afford it.

WOW!

The gov reports on inflation rate is a total farce. They carefully exclude certain things that regular people need.
My WAG is that overall inflation is a good 5 to 7 percent.

Agreed.

The federales have been cooking the books for years to delay the inevitable collapse.

What happens when $15 minimum wage takes affect. They jobs are meant for supplemental income, but our good jobs are being exported, so these jobs become are main source of employment.

First off it's not just inflation. It's the deliberate devaluing of US Currency. That's what QE1, 2, etc were. We're buying back our debt at pennies on the dollar and paying for it by printing money with no, or at least less, value than what we were loaned. There is 540% more money in circulation today than in 2000! There's a huge part of the problem. Then go to step 2- taxes, regulation, fee's, interest and more taxes! Every single gov't program, every grant, every new high school foot ball field or computer lab, every bit of pork is paid for by taxes. In fact, we spend so much we have to borrow to keep up. All that goes to adding to your bill. not just on your taxes, but at McDonalds too.

I'm just going to stop at this point and say that it's not "inflation", not as people think of it. There's not nearly as much "greed" in play as people like to think. It's a matter of survival. Wait until the Obamcare employer mandate kicks in, wait until the min wage is doubled to $15.@hour, wait until some politician promising "free stuff" gets in office. Then your 20.00 McDonalds meal will be several times that.

I got one of those shinny ads from local GM dealer advertising new Silverado's for a BASE price of $45,000! I thought I paid an outrageous price of $30,000 for my 2004 model. Oh well, I reckon I will hang on to it for rest of years I have left.

Find a Costco near you even if you have to drive a couple hours. Real Dr, real exam, tuning inclused at 1/4 the price you were quoted.

If our money is being devalued then how come it's going up in value compared to the rest of the world? Especially since we voted

I too have gotten very high quotes on hearing aids, and have looked at the cheaper ones. The more expensive ones are tuned for your specific hearing loss, and only amplify the frequencies that you need. I understand the real cheap ones just amplify everything, even the background noise, and that is my problem now. Watching TV is sometimes a real problem if there are no subtitles.

Just ordered a pair last week--$4500 for the pair. the kind you show will do nothing for me since they amplify all sounds. I have high frequency hearing loss from shooting. Tried some samples he had in office and without them I could not heat door hinges squeak, but with them I could. They do reduce background noise, so maybe I can hear normal voices while driving down road and will be able to hear crickets chirp and birds sing, spring peepers and other things I have not been able to hear in 50 years.

Huh have the wages gone up 540% That the dollar has been devalued, Everybody took a pay cut so you are making the same amount as the third world.

Seems that a lot of people are blaming the businesses and that is not really where the fault lies - for the most part their profit is flat.

As someone else mentioned the government has been cooking the books for years but it can't last forever. Much of the fault lies with the government spending so much to buy feree stuff for those who didn't earn it and have no right to it. In our city they actually have tables set up at intersections to give free phones and air minutes away. At the low end high school my wife teaches at every student has a free government phone!

Also that $15 dollar minimum wage some folks wanted is causing a lot of the low end business, like fast food, to either raise prices significantly or cut employees.

No matter how you cut it the cause is phony politicians trying to bribe for votes by using our money (and borrowing our grandkids money) to give free stuff away to people who do not deserve it.

I hope you are not disappointed but I have been wearing hearing aids for for 6 years and the last pair are top of the line from the VA. Worth about $7000 a pair(rechargeable batteries etc.) and they still are not [perfect. Car noise when driving, IN A CROWD THEY ARE UNUSABLE BECAUSE EVERYONE IS TALKING, back ground noise is still a problem. I use them for television, church and get togethers but many time I have to turn them off. All my friends with hearing aids do the same except for on person.

Right on target!
Owing a few trillion is no big deal when the fundamental value of your currency is low.

So, what's a Fed to do?....Keep on printing!

Hi Steve
Don't ever let looks deceive you with some people. When we ran our dealership we had a broad range of customers. There were some had big shiny houses, fancy cars and stuff. Most times those guys were late payers or had no money It was all show. we had a couple guys told us they had no money but would pay cash as soon as they could, if we could help them. I never had a problem getting paid. They appreciated the help as nobody else would touch them in the area. The others used to say don't work there you won't get paid. I guess it was all in the way they treated some customers. I just used to smile and say nothing.

The last backhoe loader I sold went to a guy that by your description based on assumption would of been out the back going through garbage for supper. I was told about him from another customer. The guy said stay down wind of him. Treat him right when he comes to look and he will buy that machine and pay cash before it leaves the yard. Well when the guy came the description was right. But he pealed of good clean crisp notes to the value of the machine!. The guy had the money, but just didn't buy much if any, soap or fancy clothes. I found out from another guy later this guy had a big fleet of machines and it was all paid for on the day with cash, and how wealthy he actually was, for his looks.

No, the world currency is becoming even more worthless than the inflated USD.....

Russ,

It is a world economy, the US is doing much better than anywhere else, but it is a shame both parties are on such extremes that their policies can destroy the US. external_link has done a great job considering the do nothing congress that has tried to make the economy a failure. Just think how good we would be if they actually worked. I think the affordable (not) health care program is a mess, but some change had to be made to the way it was and the nnalert did nothing to pull it back to the middle.

The dismal performance of the currencies of the rest of the world makes the US Dollar the "World Currency". Literally. Commodities around the world are traded in US dollars. Even though the Bretton Woods accords no longer apply. Russia would love to sell oil in rubles. China would like to sell commodities in yen. But for them to try to do so would be a joke. The US dollar is the currency of the trading world. That's why there is such a high demand for dollars. Over two thirds of the dollars "in circulation" are outside of the United States. And, it will remain that way for a long time to come.

(quoted from post at 04:09:03 03/22/16) Here's the approximate cost for hearing aids. You do the math on the profit from selling them.

I bought a pair of similar hearing aids for hunters. Supposed to be directional and let you hear turkeys gobble, etc.

They were about $40 and were mostly worthless.

To some extend you get what you pay for.

You think hearing aids are high??? There is a 400 to 600% mark up on Caskets. Thinking about building myself one.
You can order all the casket handles and hardware online.

We mostly eat and do what little drinking we do in for that and another reason with the drinking, don't need to be busted. We can eat at home for the whole week for what it would cost for two meals out. About once a month we will get a pizza and we do buy a couple of drinks and maybe some fries at the bluegrass jam in a local place once a month also. But that is about it. I would rather be home anyway. I like where I live and don't mind a bit being here.

The world economy dictates the value of any currency. The president has nothing to do with that. He didn't cause the other currencies to crash.

You voted in the president I dislike so much. I voted for the other guy!

Inflation is there. Just the increase in health care cost alone. Sure they claim that they have insured 20 million people with his program. But he fails to mention the roughly 34 million that had health care and can no longer afford it. My daughters health care jumped from about 550 a month to over 1100 this past fall thanks to your guy. That's 100% inflation on just health care alone!

If it hadn't been devalued, if the Fed wasn't running the printing presses night and day and if we didn't have $19 trillion in debt (almost doubled since your guy took office) it would be worth much, much more.

Rick, enrollees are down to under 9 million people. There was just a big article a week or so about it, including Bummer giving a ton of money to the insurance companies that is against the law and lots of talk of the "death spiral" being a mathmatical certainty at this point.

It would have been many times cheaper to just pay for that 9 million peoples health care....

Do ya suppose it has anything to do with the fact that 10 million more people have jobs today than were working seven years ago?

Are you trying to say that people are dropping their external_link mandated policies when they get a job and buying something else?
