My knowledge is JD and IH tractors, so keep that in mind.

On the older tractors why was the heat and a/c on separate knobs? It makes no sense. On the 40 series Deeres I have and the IH's you can have the heat on full blast and the air on as cold as it get just fighting each other. The only thing I can think of is to defrost the windows on humid days. On my Deeres the decals are worn so the first few times I head to the field in the spring it is a guessing game to remember which dials to turn. I bought a 7800 JD and they finally have automotive style controls. I can't tell you how many times I have gotten out to see if the compressor has kicked in and I have both the heat and a/c on negating each other. It might call for some tape and a sharpie to label them.

Don't remember what's in the top of the Deere cab,but in the Whites, the knob for the heat actually opens and closes a valve to let the hot water flow. I don't know how you'd marry that up to the thermostat for the AC.

They are separate so you can dehumidify the air at any time, but it is of no value below about 35 degrees.

We had air conditioning on our old tractors growing up on a little farm in the 60's only in the winter - spreading manure with a stiff wind and below zero wind chill was all the air conditioning you needed.

The systems are totally separate and be glad.

I just worked on a 6420 with a COMPLICATED control with cams and gears that operates the water valve and the AC temp switch with one knob.

LOTS of mechanism, and even with the good cab dust makes it sticky.

Cable, Key #4 controls the heater coolant valve, Key #2 controls the AC temp switch.

The control "head" is at the upper right, and quite complicated just to integrate the two controls and associated dampers.

Not to worry. Automobile manufacturers liked the idea of running both at the same time so much they use it on everything now a day's.

Heater control: add more cardboard to the radiator.

A/C control: use higher gear and open up throttle.

Works on my '50 H.

I think that they did it so that they had less parts to develop; just 2 cables/rods/wires or servos to worry about. Otherwise, you'd need some fashion of linkage to activate the separate functions as you called for heating or cooling. AND......... probably cheaper and easier to fix.

Pretty sure some wiseacre switched the knobs on mine. In the summer I turn on the air...but it is hot. In the winter I turn on the heat...but only cold comes out. Thinking maybe THIS summer I will try running the heat and see does it make a difference?
