What type of RR rail is this?

Most corners and 80's are marked around here with old rail sections put in for posts, but this one near our house is different in cross section. What was it for?

There was something nearby called the inter-urban(?) railroad that ran parallel to the existing railroad, maybe that's where it was from. I was wondering if that's what it was.

That rail is probably part of a switch section and would be what is called a guarded switch. The groove would help guide the wheel on both sides of the wheel flange and would be on the inside rail of the switch adjacent to the switch frog.

Had to be a pretty shallow wheel flange for it to hold up and not break or easily derail.light loads too probably passenger.a loaded freight would shatter that rail in nothing flat!

coshoo has it. Street car rail. Here is a graphic of just about everything that has been invented. If you look in the second row I have one of those and it is very old. What is funny is when a city is going to put in "Light Rail" and as they dig up the street they find the rails from 60 years ago after the idiots closed down the original street cars. The DC capital had one of the largest and best street car systems in the country till GM told the government to get rid of the street cars and buy busses. And we let the idiots rule. That last one is a spanking brand new street car rail. You can put Belgin block right up to it or street tar and the flange of the wheels in that little groove. Also keeps wagon wheels for getting busted off.

(quoted from post at 19:09:12 03/16/16) I suspect some kind of trolley or streetcar, back in the day.
ail like this generally was used by city trolley lines where the rail was part of a paved street. The cup next to the head provided space for the flange of the rail wheel. If you look closely at Dart track in Dallas down Pacific Avenue you will see a similar rail.

Part of it ran from southern Indiana to indy and north. It went thru 2 of the farms I rent now and some places the old rail bed is still visible.
