Pretty nasty in the sugar bush today

We had three roads in the sugar bush that wern't collected from yesterday..We needed to collect the sap before it soured. Wether was miserable and rotton. Temp about 36F and steady rain. I felt sorry for the rest of the guys out in that weather. I was sitting in my cab with the heat on. A year ago, they were laughing at me for building the cab for my 440, but I had the last laugh today.
The steam was just rolling down over the saphouse roof, from the loovers, and it was nearly imposible to see where I was when pulling up to unload.
Yesterdays run yielded 53.5 gal of syrup, and what was gathered should yield another 20 gal. today.
With colder weather and posible snow over the comeing weekend we may still meet our production goals for 2016.
Mother Nature has a way of balancing things out in spite of what the politicians say.

Looks good! I'm just a bit higher in elevation than you I think, around 1450ft, it was 34* here all day, now 35* lol, just a muddy mess.

Jay, My house is at 1406' the sugarbush as you know is higher so 1450' would be about right for the elevation at the sap house. It is 35F here also at the moment.

So AR what is ideal weather, cold but not freezing or what are you needing to make the sap flow. I thought it was spring and warm weather here that made the trees bud out but then we are too far south to do the maple thing.

Wow, I dident realize that, with the up and downs on the way out to your place were pretty close in elevation, well last March 25th we met you and a few guys at you place, alot different weather than now! Lol

Above freezing days and below freezing nights. I also heard when the wind blows from the east the sap runs the least, when the wind blows from the west the sap runs the best, I don't know if that's true, maybe Loren knows better the ACG guy.

I was always told if the wind gets up to much the sap won't run. Something to do with the trees moving to much. The best around here was a below feezing night then up to 40 and a light rain . Sometimes it would evan run all night. Gather in the afternoon and again in the early morning.

Bet you could have sat around this with me after being out in that cold wet day, and had a "pop" or two, and talked about how things were in the good old days

Dan, I wish I was there also, to share a couple of barley pops and trade old Case dealer tails. HeHe
On the other hand, knowone stood in front of the evaporators long with wet cloths as they would have been steamed like a lobster.

Bruce, That is my 80 plus year old uncle. He kidded me the most about having a cab on my tractor. I had the last laugh yesterday, as he stood bellyed up to the front of the evaporator after we were done. We all told him that even if I built a cab for the 990, he would not be able to get his big belly up into it. We all have fun in spite of the hard work and sometimes lousy weather.

Jay, the parking area 5mi to the east of of town on US20 is the highest elevation on 20 east of the Mississippi. There is a big monument/sign there telling about the history of the "Great Western Turnpike" now US20. It also tells about the Cherry Valley massacre Where a local colony of settlers were attacked by indians and killed a scalped.

As the other said, freeze/thaw... When it gets to warm for to long then the sap is drawn higher in the tree then reaches the buds(popping them open), when the buds pop sapping is done for the year. That's how I heard it, I think.
