Carnation. Deconstruction

Drove past the Carnation Condensary plant in Sheridan yesterday, twice. Making good progress in reducing it to rubble. Probably 2/3 or more done, including the smokestack. Only West wall and a bit of South walls remain. Oh, and a huge pile of rubble. Going to be trucking that outta there all summer. Wonder how deep the foundations go. Must be fairly massive underground as well. Must have been a pretty big building project back in the day, especially with out the present day construction equipment. Lots of manual labor!

Yesterday morning,it looked to me like they had all the concrete floor gone toward the east. Just a strip of concrete left along the north side where the rail road siding was.
My brother said the other night that he had at least three people wanting the rubble for fill and to crush, but because of the asbestos and lead paint,it all had to go to an approved land fill.
These pictures were from Wednesday when they were taking the smokestack down.

Wondered where it was going. Sure would fill someone's swamp in the back 40! Big pile of it there. Do they provide dust masks for the audience bystanders?

Probably not. Wonder where all that asbestos dust is going??? Or did they have to do abatement before demolition could start. That is the usual protocol. Surprised to not see them spraying water on everything to keep the dust down. gobble

They are spraying water on it. They have hoses hooked up to the fire hydrants and a guy standing there spraying water toward the buckets.

Randy, didn't the big brick building with the smokestack in Perrinton used to be part of Carnation? I thought that is what dad told me. Then it was a fertilizer plant, now it is half torn down and a semi/heavy truck salvage yard.

He might be right, but I don't remember it. There used to be Carnation owned tankers coming in here from Sparta and Hesperia. I'm having a senior moment right now on the third one,and it was the last one to still be hauling in here too, maybe Ray knows for sure, but it was either Barryton or Blanchard. I know they had a field man up there. He used to come down here now and then.

Of course Pet had a plant in Charlotte. Kraft had one in Clare, and there was the old Remus butter plant that's MMPA/Leprino now. Darned shame MMPA didn't do something with this one. It wasn't for lack of some of us trying.

Remember a few years ago they had a big stick about the old gas stations with underground tanks that were causing contamination? A friend was driving gravel trains hauling the stuff to an approved sight. I asked what did they do with it? They turned it over several times and then sold it as topsoil.

Don't think it was Blanchard. We were on grade A early in the '50s and were supplying MMPA in Carson City.

and they 'decontaminated' the old gas tanks by resting a torch on an old tire, shoving it up against the tank & running to cover. When it burned thru the explosion lifted the tank 3 ft off the ground & it was now safe to sell as a culvert!
