Fertilizer and Fuel

Noticed gas prices took a jump today.

Heading out to buy a ton of fertilizer and will pick up another ton next week.

To my neighbors - this seems like an enormous amount of fertilizer. I'm sure you folks use many many time more tons of fertilizer as I'm a drop in the bucket haymaker.

We've read about fuel buying and the gallons bought while prices are down,

How many tons of fertilizer (regardless of what it is) do you consume in a year?

Have you bought in yet - I'm thinking fertilizer prices are going up soon, along with fuel prices.

More than a semi, typically.

Fert prices were dropping some.

The trouble with fert, there is no free market. It is controlled by 3 big players, they effectively have an OPEC effect of fert, and charge whatever they can in the worldwide ag ecconomy.

Nitrogen is closely related to crude prices, as well as natural gas.

The rest its all about transportation, how to get it shipped in to the upper Midwest.

I haven't had to buy commercial fertilizer for the vineyard in decades- but I do haul over a hundred small spreader loads of cow manure each Spring.

Last year we spread three semi loads of lime, both in the grapes and on open/hay ground.

I normally spread about 20 tons of mixed fertilizer on hay ground after first cutting each year

Right around 40 tons; 20-22 urea, 15-20 muriate of potash, and 4-5 DAP. I usually prepay 20,000 dollars worth and when its gone its gone, lol. It depends somewhat on weather and if I'm grazing corn that year or not. Also, varies according to how the spreader trucks, floaters, and tenders work out from the feed store. I'm on the outer range of their service area so I try to be respectful and only order full loads.

Fuel, my dealer won't let me prepay and him hold (boo hiss). So I have to take physical delivery. I can hold 3000 gallons of off road, 900 gallons of on road, and 600 gallons of gas. That's around 2 months supply on gas and on road, off road that lasts about all winter but wont last a month in the summer. Any more I've quit trying to time the market because we get busy and I end up running out so I've gone to auto fill 1st of the month.

I picked up a ton of 10-20-20 two weeks ago, pallet came out unwrapped and most bags were hard as a brick. They took it back and I was going to go in tomorrow and get the same in a bulk bag, but weather looks iffy. If you buy from Southern States and are not already doing this, talk to the manager and get the per ton price.

My employer put in a big enough tank to hold I think almost a tanker trailer and a half of fuel. The savings on the cost of one load of fuel more than paid for the computerized system that controls the pump and keeps track of who put how much fuel in which vehicle.
