On my gleaner f combine its just a regular f with a gas engine it won't spark when cranking over but will spark when I stick a meter probe between the contacts what would cause
this?

10--4 -- on the dirty points -- just went thru that on an old M farmall on tuesday - after you file them good -- pull a plain piece of paper thru the closed points to finish cleaning them --

If it sparks ONLY if you create a circuit across the points and then remove it (allows LV Primary coil current to flow but then stop when circuit removed which causes coil to fire at HV Secondary)

THE POINTS ARE BADLY BURNED OR CORRODED OR NOT FULLY CLOSING.

I would inspect the points to insure they close down fully when the distributor isn't on high cam lobe, check for popper gap when on high cam lobe, and if they are burned or pitted or corroded (Often the cause of no fire) try to clean/buff/polish or light file them with a points file and insure closure and proper gap and see what happens. If they are bad Id replace them.

Hope this helps

Could also be an ignition switch problem.
Supplying voltage in the run position but not in the crank position.
Also check ballast resistor and bypass circuit if so equipped.
