John deere 4030 hydraulic problem

Hi. I purchased a 74 John deere 4030 back In the fall and i have been working in fixing it up over the winter. I changed all the filters and fluids and everything worked fine. I started it up this morning and hooked it up to my discbine so I could service it and tried to swing the the discbine and I had no hydraulics and the 3 point either did not work or it was very sluggish. The quad range shifts fine. There is no leaks and nothing noticeable happened as far as whines or knocks in the system. It worked great and then nothing at all. What should I look into first? Any help would be appreciated!

I would first check the coupler on the front of the engine that drives the hydralic pump. Those get stripped out from time to time.

You need to know the system pressure. If you were right at the point the priority valve was set at you could be just under the pressure required for it to power the SCVs and three point. The system makes the brakes and steering have priority over the work functions.

Do you have any idea what the normal pressure should be?I'm sure there is very little considering the problem I had. When I serviced it, I also checked the suction filter and it was clean. I think the tractor sat for a while before i purchased it. I just drove it around on the roads for a 6 mikes since i serviced it. Should i check the filter again? Would there be a reason why it would get clogged that soon after I checked it?

If you did not find anything the first time than I really doubt it would have much in it now. Post this down on the John Deere forum. Those guys will remember the pressure setting on the priority value. Tim S really is much more up to date on this than me. I have not had to do much hydraulic work on 30 series in years. I am rusty. LOL

I have a 1630 that lost the hydraulics. It was a leaky line in the transmission that pressurizes the PTO break. No oil could get up front to the tank that supplies the pump. Check that tank to see if there is any oil in it. I engaged the PTO for a temporary fix. I replaced the two lines and the PTO break and its back to work. That might help.

bcdave: The 1630 is an entirely different tractor. The lines your talking about are not used on the JD 4430.

Kent: That is the system standby pressure. The pressure I am meaning is were the priority valve shuts off the scvs and the rockshaft. If I remember correctly it is around 1600-1800 PSI.

Does the power steering work OK yet even when the rest of the hydraulics doesn't? If the steering still works and the hydraulics do not, the priority valve has shut off the rest of the hydraulics. As JDSeller has stated that occurs at about 1700 psi. When a sudden drop in pressures happens, but you still have steering, the stroke control valve gets hung up and won't allow full pressure. When this occurs, I remove the stroke control valve, start the engine for a few seconds, thoroughly clean the stroke control valve and reinstall the valve. It does not take much of a flake of anything to hang up the stroke control valve. I suspect when you serviced the tractor, something broke loose and lodged in the stroke control valve.

Yes, the power steering and the brakes work also. I will check that valve. Thank you! I hope that is all it is.

Does steering & brakes operate correctly? Did you check trans sump screen(parts key 27) for cleanness when you changed hyd filter? After checking frt drive coupler another possibility is trans hex drive shaft has rounded off therefore trans pump isn't pumping correctly. You can check trans pump shaft(parts key 22) for wear by removing 3 pt centerlink attaching bracket then remove plug under bracket to access the shaft. Hex shaft pulls out towards the rear. One can view shaft spinning when engine is running after plug(parts key 24) has been removed.

That pressure don,t matter much if the system is up to 2250 it will not get involved. as i recall that valve is set to close at 1900 psi.

I did check the trans screen and it is clean. The
power steering brakes and quadrange work fine. I
will keep that in mind. Thank you. I'm busy baling
switch grass today but I hope to get back to it during
the week sometime.
