H steering question

I changed out the universal joint in my H steering today with the shaft with the steering wheel still on the tractor. Several times I thought about pulling that shaft off the tractor but the only way I see to get it past everything is to split the tractor or remove the steering column with lots of stuff attached and 73 year old bolts and still have to deal with the steering column being a pain in the neck as the shaft has a welded yoke. I'm done with the repair but I'm curious is there any easier way to remove that shaft.

Remove steering wheel, loosen collars, loosen or remove bolts in steering post base and tilt. May also want to remove one end of throttle rod but the throttle lever can be moved to wide open as steering post is tilted for enough room to pull steering shaft out. Had to be heck of a job to get the universal with inside lock rings in and out without removing shaft. Steering wheel came be a hard to remove also on some though.
