Scab On potatos

About 10 years ago I made a garden spot where there was a lot of brush growing. It was full of holes where I removed the brush. A neighbor had a lot of composted manure so I used that as fill to raise the ground up and then cobered it with about 12 inches of top soil.
We usually plant one row of potato and the first 2 years it was fine then the scab started. I buy new seed every year but last year we threw most of them away. What can I do to the ground to ill this off. I have rotated the row to different spots and still get the same

Sulfur is good for common scab control. Best to check with local extension service websites or other professional sites for the rate of application.

Potato scab seems to be a problem in basic soil, add sulphur to get your ph down to 6-6.5 and it will be much less prevalent.

If you have access to any pine trees put a big handful of needles in each hill before covering the seed. This helps control the PH. Happy farming.

Interesting idea on the pine needles . I have a row of spruce right beside the potato garden and I should try it. Scab is common on mine and some varieties are worse than others. I still use them , just have to peel and they are fine.

I would recommend a Ph. of 5.0-5.5 for the potatoes. Potato scab is caused by a bacterium-like organism that overwinters in the soil. The organism can survive indefinitely in alkaline soil but is relatively scarce in acid soils. It is transmitted to plants by infected seed, wind and water. The organism is also spread in fresh manure.

My dad always said not to put manure on potato ground because it makes them skabby. Guess he was right.
