Wanting good used(yea right) tractor

Mahindra makes good tractors. There were early models made from licensed versions of IHC utility tractors. The more modern they get the more electronic they become (ain't it the pits) but they are serviceable and not toys or junk. Jim

I thought that the first Mahindra tractors I saw around would be JUNK. They surprised me. There are several around here that are owned by guys that are terrible to their equipment and they are still going. Are they a tractor I would want to farm full time with??? NO. Are they a good fit for someone that is just doing the normal weekend warrior type of stuff?? Yes.

I think that they can be good fit for someone wanting a tractor that does not want to spend big money but does not want to work on a 30-50 year old tractor.

Tom thinking about your earlier post about the Long and then this post. It would appear your budget is in the $3500-5000 range. You should be able to find several main line tractors in that price range that would work for you. The ones that come to mind would be Ford 3000, MF 135,Oliver 1600/1650, and many others.

You nailed it-I'd love to find a food solid 3000 or 135--I know nothing about Oliver..Didn't know they were still around..

should say Good solid --edit feature hasnt worked in forever on the modern view..Dunno what tjheir problem is but sure is aggravating since the modern view is suppose to be so wonderful...

Naaaa-want something to use-not to work on all the time..already got a 2N Ford so plenty of
tinkering when I use to be able to tinker..need tp sell it--just sits-NEVER used..

My wife wanted a tractor so we bought a McCormick new. It is 40 hp, 4 wheel drive, with a loader . New price was $18,000. She loves it and it has been trouble free. We paid cash but they were offering good credit terms. I think you can buy a new Mahindra tractor now with a lot of options for about $25,000 and they offer terms.

And where would you find a dealer for dealer only items? Or for that mater find anybody to work on them when needed and even if you are a profesional mechanic you are at some time going to need outside help to work on them. Stick to main line tractors.

Tom Take a look If I wanted a new 1 in that range I would. Old boy south of me bought 1. he is rough on stuff, still going after 15 years of abuse.

Plus, after having had a tractor with 3 point I doubt you'd ever want to go back to a tractor that didn't have it.

Do you use searchtempest?
I searched within 500 miles of Jackson, MS and there are several Ford 3000s that appear to be worth a glimpse. I don't know if you have the means to haul one though.
BTW, a 3000 is only rated at about 37 hp - less than your stated 45-50. But keep in mind that most modern tractors are going to be rated by flywheel hp and not pto hp like the old ones were. So a 37 hp 3000 will be up about 45 hp if rated at the flywheel.
To get into the 50 hp range on a Ford would require you to go with a 4000 chassis which is a substantially larger machine. The are superior machine but not as handy a size as a 3000 size.
Here are a just a few that I found on searchtempest.com. There seems to be a lot of them down in your part of the country. Cheaper than here too.
Whatever you do hold out for the 8 sp w/LPTO and power steering. Make those two items a deal breaker if they don't have it.

Allis Chalmers WD, WD-45, good power, live pto, bullet proof transmission clutch, (for the live power) feature. You should be able to get a NICE one for $35-4500. Or for thtat matter any of the newer D series AC too.

I don't about where you live, but here in NY Mahindra has a pretty extensive dealer network and the tractors are quite popular. I would say they are starting to rival Kubota for popularity in the hobby farm/small farm sales. Can't really say as to the parts availability, but the closest Mahindra dealer has been here for years and I don't hear any complaints about him.

But as you say, if there is no dealer within reasonable driving distance, they would be a poor choice.

Yea-already have that problem with a Hyundai car I bought new in 2012--no problems at all but for service and to get my mileage reimbursement I have to go to closest reputable dealer 1-1/2 hrs away...

Do a google search of used tractors in your area. I'll bet that you can find something to fit your needs from a wide variety of colors (manufacturers).

I know it is getting down to the bottom of barrel but what about a Deere even an older one. 2355 in the 1980's 5400 series etc??? You can get parts and resale value is usually there. SOMETIMES THEY WILL RUN AND WORK FOR A WHILE!!!!

What have you needed for your Hyundai? The twin sister 2014 Kia that I own has about 35K on it and all I've had to do is change the oil. Meanwhile the two 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees the company owns are still waiting for service with a dealer a mile away.

Yes but with all those pesky high priced parts and then adding a hitch to all your implements to pull that fuel cart Why you could buy five tractors from tsc and still be ahead

I want something that'll go when I have a minute not something to work on....already got a 2N for that..

Far as I know closest one is about 45 miles--they have a reputation of not acting l9ke they want your business of its going to require them to go out on the lot with you..yea that bothers me..same reason I got a hyundai-I wanted a Honda--Dealer in Brookhaven MS 12 miles from me Just didnt want my business-you walk in and they were very involved in a round table card game--u were lucky if they even grunted at you....might be different now--I still want a Honda but getting where I cant drive much and the Hyundai is paid for soooo what do u do???

Yea, one especially looks pretty good--course we all know about those paint overhauls--hadn't thought about the 8 sp PTO and assumed they'd all have live pto--thanks for the reminder==and yea I have said no matter what it will have power steering.. Thanks for the help...

If you mantain it properly it will be ready to work when you are a older tractor from the 70s 80s 90s is also made of steal instead of recycled tin cans

4610 Ford. Bulletproof 3 cylinder diesel, independent pto, 62hp at the motor made from "82 til "88(?)$6000-9000 for a standard model with no loader r iplements, depending on the hours.

how would a M be in style . no live pto most no ps steers like crap poor gear selection in trans 3rd to slow 4 go like H dangerous as h mount from rear .no 3 point. that would be the last tractor for bush hoging

For that $$$?s, I should think you could get into a decent later model tractor, beyond the MF 135?s and Ford 3000's - which were/are very good tractors. If you go mahandra or another import brand, probably get something even newer for the same money.

Take some time, look at a ton of tractors at dealers, craigslist and tractorhouse and get a good idea of price vs model. IMHO, buying from an individual vs a dealer is the lowest cost. Make sure you ask why the sale, like I'm retiring from farming, this was my dad's tractor (estate sale), bought a larger hp tractor (and it's setting there) and the story is somewhat believeable.

Do you're homework and know what you're looking at ahead of time and when the deal presents itself, pounce on it like an impulse buyer - but thoroughly informed.

Hard to go wrong with Ford/New Holland and MF utility tractors.

Good luck,
Bill

Case 530 diesel from mid 60's. Plenty of power, engine easy on fuel, a good one can be had for $4000 to $5000, and parts still available.

have looked at all the posts and I also think the Fords (4000) etc would be your fit. What hasn't been asked is what do you want it to be worth in 5 yrs in case you change situations ? Any "real tractor" (4000 Ford type) if kept in good repair will not cost you anything. Assuming you don't go overboard on price it will not go down. The "suburbanite" tractors....not so much. One will be an investment and the others are all still "expenses" and will be for a few years to come. Even the 1980,s real tractors are now investments. Everyone's situation changes sooner or later. Buy what will sell and what will sell for what you paid. You can't beat using a tractor for 5 yrs for free. Buddy of mine just bought a sweet little 444 International utility with IH loader/front aux. pump, and less than 2500 hrs. Brand new Firestones all around and all new loader hoses. A real looker and runs perfect. Everything works nice inc power steering. He can use this for 10 yrs and still get all his money back. He started out looking at used Kubotas. A 2002 "landscape tractor" with a punie loader and not enough weight/power to pull a frog off a rock still cost more than this IH. If you want absolutely zero repairs guaranteed then you will need to spend the $ 30,000 on a new "play tractor". $8000 will buy you a real tractor that will meet all your needs and as a bonus will HOLD it's value.
