Deutz air cooled expert needed

I just got a Deutz F21511 engine and the man said it was running about a year ago and it is stuck but I finally got it freed up and it turns over by hand until it gets
to certain spot and then it locks up turn it the other way and it doesnt go a complete turn and it locks up again, took the rocker arms off and took the fuel pump off and
that hasnt helped, what could it be? And thought about pulling the heads but do they come off after taking the 2 big allen head bolts out? Thanks for any advice

I am no expert on Deutz engines, but I do have a Deutz F4L912 engine. I am sure that there are four bolts for each head (located symmetrically around each cylinder). Access to two of them on each head might be blocked by screw out brass plugs.
Yes, remove the heads, see what is wrong; might need new head bolts to re-assemble and the head bolt torque and procedure.

Something between a piston and head preventing full rotation. If you can determine which pistons are up when it locks, you will know which heads to pull off first. 4 bolts per head, 2 probably hidden under shielding or plugs. As to head bolt replacement, Deutz says to measure the length of each bolt and they have a max length that can be re-used. I do not have the books for them but try to contact MMDEL who posts in the minneapolis moline forum as he helped me with the last one I rebuilt.

I am no expert on anything, but have overhauled many Deutz tractors. First of all the piston to head clearance on a deutz is about 1.5 mm. Very close. So close that some will develop a knock when they are run hot, then lose it only seconds after the load is removed, this is from the expansion of the piston and aluminum head. You can remove the head assembly and reuse the fire ring. Some don't even use a head gasket. Just cast iron jug to aluminum head lapped together. Just a little carbon that has fallen off the piston or head will cause them to lock up. Dont be scared of working on it, its just different from engines built here in the states. I can walk you through what ever you want to work on this, so feel free to give me a call. I would be glad to help you out. Good Luck,,,, Al 231/757/0064

Thanks for all the help will try and pull the head today, and thanks Al I might be calling you for some torques etc.
