My son took the Polar Plunge Saturday to raise money for the Special Olympics. His boss donated $500 for his plunge, plus the other pledges that he got. The temp was in the teens with a wind chill of ridiculous below zero.

i did a polar plunge years ago near lacrosse wisconsin on lake onalaska, ice fishing. i learned to NEVER believe my older brother when he said the ice was safe!!!! geez that was cold!! also did some scuba under the ice recovering a snowmobile, but i was wearing a dry suit. way too old for that nowa days!!

Was that at Crystal lake, by any chance?

Sad happening there - a fellow drove his utility vehicle into the hole. He perished, passengers were injured.

"you didnt join him? (lol)"

"Looks like fun! Did you offer to go if they'd double the pledge? ;)"

No way! I didn't even like being out there doing chores in that cold Saturday.

They do one every year on Goodyear lake in Central NY - they have a hot tub set up to get in after you take the plunge. They usually donate the money to a local child with serious health issues
I don't think my heart could take the shock...

When I was in my 20's, I used to jump through a hole in the ice at a finish camp in SE MI every year after a couple of barley pops and 30 minutes in the sauna. Really wasn't to bad. Especially when you went back in the sauna afterwords.

Ya,we used to get out of the hot tub and roll in the snow. Quite the tingling feeling when you'd get back in the hot water.

I have never understood this stuff. If the cause is worthy, why do you need a bunch of fools jumping in ice water and risking their health to raise money for it? If that's what it takes to get people to give money, then there's something wrong with those people. Just my opinion, but I give to causes without requiring well intentioned people to do silly things.
