Is this a Scam or Not??

Got a check in the mail from someone and have no clue what it is for. Have talked to so many people about a couple tractors I have and don't recall who I've talked to in the last 2 months. Most people bs and talk like they want it so I'll give them a price and tell them the address if they say they are coming. Look at the picture. What you see is everything that came in the mail. This is a cashiers check I wonder if it's real or it's a scam?? I've tried looking the guy's name up on whitepages and no number is listed. The address brings up a trailer home and says No one resides there. Hmmmm. Not cashing the check until I hear from this guy or figure it out.

i would have my local bank look into the check and see if it is valid without cashing it. take the envelope and all with you.

Take it to your bank, explain your concerns. They can contact the bank it came from, they can contact the person on the account. Maybe it will jog your memory, maybe it's a mistake.

If it's a scam the truth will come out somewhere in the process. Meanwhile it will be on hold until a decision is made, don't want to just let it lay around.

Usually those come with a story that they sent too much money. Then they ask that you deposit a certain amount and want you to send the "over payment" amount back to them.

The check generally bounces after a few days and they get the money you sent them.

Don't know if that's the case here but it's a common scam.

I got a call from "Publishers Crearing House' yesterday. The foreign caller wanted me to send a large amount of money(taxes, handleing fees....) to collect my 5 million prize.

I WOULD TURN IT INTO YOUR LOCAL BANK AND LET THEM HANDLE IT. IF SENT SOMEBODY A $5000 CHECK FOR A TRACTOR, I WOULD BE CALLING THEM EVERYDAY TO SEE IF THEY RECIEVED THE CHECK, BUT THATS JUST ME.

I'm voting SCAM. Co-worker got one a few years back for $5,000. It had the name of a major oil company on it. Just like yours, it had no
explanation or other information. He took it to the bank. Bank said it wasn't any good.

RTR,

I agree with all of the other guys about taking the check to your bank and have them check it out. I did a search on the bank routing number. It is a valid routing number for PNC Bank, National Association for their branches in Kentucky.

Good luck. Please let us know what you find out.

Tom in TN

Take that to the USPS. That is mail fraud and they can trace where it was sent from.

I can give you the phone number for 148 Bethune circle, but it is not a watson who lives there.

Of course it is as they would be calling or something about what they think they bought and its over a yrs old you don't wait a year to pay for something and never contac you. Let the bank check it out you don't even know what item they are trying to buy scam scam scam

Yep, has scam written all over it. I received similar a few years ago, a check written on a Tractor and implement dealer. I called the business and mine was the 2nd or 3rd call he had received, and he had
already closed the account, and contacted the authorities. Scary part was the check was in same sequence as his real checks, and correct account, etc, just on different stock. This meant the scammer had
gotten his bank and account info, and basically duplicated everything except for the check stock. Fortunately he was alerted and was able to close the account before anyone cashed the checks. The scammer
was attempting to send me a check for more than I was asking, and was asking me to return the difference.

I can see where it could be a scam but really what scam would it be if the check is ok? I didn't see where it said 2014 on it. Everything I read with dates is current.

Take it to a bank and have them check it for you they can do so now days and if they say a scam then take it to the Court house and him the P.A. do what he should if he will that is

I got one of those calls from PCH. Someone with bad foreign accent, told me I had registered some years ago... That's when I stopped him, told him I had not had any dealings with PCH, and hung up.

A few seconds later my phone rang again, apparently a butt dial. The number showed as a different number, but I could hear a couple people jibber jabbering in a foreign language, one sounded like the same one that had just called.

Scam. I received one two years ago for a car I never owned. Besides who would be sending out a check that is two years old.

They are misreading the dates RTR. The 2016 looks like 2014. Obviously what you should be doing is going to the local PNC (or your bank if no PNC around) and verifying the validity of the check. If it is valid, send the remitter a note asking what it is for. If you are afraid to put it in your personal account, then open a new account for it or hold it until you have an answer.

The sad truth is that we now look for gremlins everywhere. May be nothing at all. It can't harm you just sitting on the desk.

Best rule of thumb , if ya don't know them or there 1st cousin Then the deal is C I F ( that is CASH IN FIST and only after ya check them for being FUNNY MONEY . )No we don't play games if you want the tractor or what ever then you come you look you haul .

Is there a local PNC bank, if so take it to them, they will want to know. If they say it is a scam, take it to the post
office.Mail fraud is a serious offense.

One of the banks I use is PNC. If you like to play games and there is a chance you could collect some bucks, do this. Take it to your bank and open an extra account. Deposit this check and freeze everything. You also do not want to put your SS number on the account. They know what to do. Got one of these several years ago but it was a fake. This one may not cash with that old of a date on it. Have fun you might make some money. Some banks do not want to play with this stuff but you can also tell them, "would you like to keep my account??" That usually gets their attention. Also make photo copies of everything.

Cashiers checks are easy to duplicate.

What they do is get a real one, make a copy of it, send you the copy.

They cash the real one, you cash the fake.

It takes the banks a bit of time to sort that out. Because there is a real check. Even if you have your bank look into it, your bank might say it is
good, and then a couple weeks later, uh oh, there are 2 checks, yours is fake and they get the money back from you.

I would take it to a bank, make the whole deal perfectly clear as to what is going on, and see what -they- suggest doing. I'd be really really
careful tho. I'm sure banks are stepping up on these things, but not very long ago it was so that you were told the check cleared, and then
weeks later oops no, it didnt, we are taking the money back.

So, be mighty careful of what you do here even if your bank says its good, be real real careful I'd want than in writing that it is good and done
and no take backs as of this date..... Cashiers checks are associated with fraud these days.

Also, is that the amount you asked for the tractor? If it is over your asking price, it is 99% sure its a fraud. They will follow up asking you to cash
the check and send then the $200 over back or some such. They will never get the tractor, all they want is the $200 you send. The check will be
a fraud.

The USPS is federal, and they have a mail fraud division specifically for this type of thing. Im not sure if you checked the tracking info I posted, but the letter originated in Los Angeles, CA. The USPS can do a lot with that envelope and all the info on it.

After checking further, there was a William Watson who lived in Oak Ridge, TN; but he passed away several years ago. This is a huge deal. There should be absolutely not a doubt that it is fraud and going to a bank will not do nearly as much good as going to the USPS. They don't mess around. In fact, you will probably be contacted by the FBI if any questions come up. The USPS fraud dept has a webpage you can go to.

Don't understand how a scammer makes money on this check.
If he says he sent too much money, please send me some back. You simple don't sent it. Please let us know what you find out.

If you get a good bank person they can really track it down and find out about the account. One thing I find funny is it has the names twice on the envelope. Is it the price you want for the tractor??? Also why did the tracking show it started in California if the guy lives in Tenn or some such???

Do not underestimate what sensitive ID/privacy/security info the scammer may glean from the transaction and the check bouncing.

If you read some of the last info security experts have written, it's all about gleaning a little piece of info here and a little piece there and putting it all together.

BTW, did you see what has come out about the little games people play to kill time on fb?

I don't seen any of the routing information on that check. All checks should have a set of numbers on the front upper part of the check like: 12-345/78910. Looks a fake to me.

RTR, last week I took a check to the bank for several thousand, they looked and looked at it and then asked me if I was expecting it. I was expecting it. I asked why they asked; they said there has been a lot of fraud around checks lately. Yes, I don't understand the benefit to the scammer. Paul

You can run those tracking numbers yourself, but if you have a good relationship with your bank they can tell you if the check is good

I agree with the general consensus that it is a scam.
I disagree with taking it to the bank. It is too old, too fishy, and in general not believable.
When it comes to an amount that is in the thousands, I KNOW what I am expecting, who it is from, and why that check would be in my hand.
Since no harm has yet been done, unless there is some attempt to defraud you, I would just put it aside. If it is somehow legitimate, the maker of the check will contact you.
Think about it: why would somebody send out a check that is so far out of date? Why would they not follow up on it? This is a significant amount of money - not exactly pocket change!! Folks just do not throw around that kind of money to no good end.

The check isn't old. It is dated just a few days before I received it and the mail date is the day after the bank processed it. The dates are "checking out". I got it In The mail just a few days ago

Bank might not be able to help you much as they often don't know squat and won't take a chance. About 2-3 years ago as we were moving to Iowa from Wisconsin I got a check from our bank in Wisconsin for like
$2.00, with a quick note saying they had been caught with their fingers in the till, irregularities were found in there check processing methods that were causing good checks to bounce and they were collecting
fees on the fraudulently bounced checks, here's our portion if the settlement. Out local bank pronounced it a scam and wouldn't cash it (honor among thieves maybe?), next time I was in Wisconsin I took it to
a branch of the bank and they cashed it.

At first look, it looked as though it had been written in 2014. Still, if you don't know where a check of this amount came from or why, it raises big red flags.

I had one of those a few years ago, selling a $350 part, scammer cut the check for $3500, told me I could keep an extra $150 for troubles and western union the extra $3000 back to them once I cashed the check. Even before I had a check in hand, the whole deal smelled of BS, so I was ready to play.

I messed with these scumbag scammers for a few days, telling them I had cashed the check but couldn't get the transfer through. They resent the details and instructions multiple times. I contacted Local PD, Bank Fraud dept and western union on the scam and nobody seemed interested in the deal.

RTR,

Can you give me the first 3 digits of the phone number on the envelope? The number is across from the yellow highlighted "waiver of signature" on the label, and ends in 207-9156.

If I were you, I would not call the number from your home or cell phone. I know pay phones are non-existent anymore; but unless you feel like wasting money on a prepaid cell phone, I wouldn't use a line linked to you, even with *67.

Just call PNC bank and validate the Check # and amount verify that is good. The bank should be able to tell you if it
is a check in good standing or not. Look up PNC bank on web dont call a number provided on check or envelope
this is a number I found a web search for PNC ( 855) 281-7316
