Water pump installation problems

Seams like I am spinning my wheels on my dodge water pump installation. I got the pump installed, the hoses on. All I needed to do is install the fan clutch. The nut on the fan clutch just wouldn't thread on the pump threaded shaft. It fit the old pup fine. I took the pump back off. Tried it again still would not thread on the pump shaft. I reordered another pump. If it comes from the same town in China there is a chance it still will not fit. I still have a month or so before I need the truck. How did your day go? Stan

Use a thread pitch gauge on the threads to determine the correct size. Could be metric! Try several from the Hard ware store. Jim

Did you try screwing it on the old shaft again? I'm not going to say why I thought that might be a good idea, only that it has happened to all of us one time or another.

My day was great, old tires on SWMBO's van were bad. Side walls splitting, cords breaking in all four tires. Been on for 2 1/2 years, 37,000 miles. Took them back and got new ones, tire store discounted new tires. Four new ones ,mounted and balanced for $200.00. Wife is happy again.

Sometimes water pump that fits a basic engine for several years, it will have a left or right hand thread. A std "v' belt may turn a diff. direction vs. a serpentine drive. Check the fins on the pump to see if they are made the same.

My day was fine, and even yours was a WHOLE LOT better than JD Seller's (see above).
Take the pump to a hardware store, and try different nuts on it. New one could be metric.

Sounds like you bought the part on-line, since you say you re-ordered it. I would have just taken the pump down to the hardware store and found a nut that fit.

IF the external threads on the pump lean to the right they are left hand thread, if they lean to the left they are right hand thread.
A fan clutch will always loosen in direction of rotation. So if looking at the front of the vehicle and the fan rotates counter clock wise then to loosen it it has to be turned in the CC direction. Same goes for bolts that hold lawn mower blades on their spindles. Loosen them in the direction the blade spins.
These are just a few tips I've learned thru the years.
