John Deere 3020 - Bought One Today

Scored a deal on a JD 3020 diesel today. Excellent shape, good paint. Will post some pics sooner than later.

a diesel, YES,...Congratulations !,. but a gasser 3010 or 20 is just a wallflower,. I had a 3010 that would consume more gasoline than anything I have ever seen before or since,, IT NEVER FAILED TO START IN THE COLDEST OF WEATHER.. I don't think the carburetor was rite for the engine from the drawing board, and its too bad , muther deere suggested to use the choke,,.often til warm ed up

I knew someone once who had a gasser 3020 sitting. He bought it for his little hobby operation and just couldn't believe how much gas it drank.

My experience too. Unlike her diesel sisters, 3020 gasser always starts no matter the cold. However it is very thirsty for gas. Also it is prone to stumbling even when fully warmed up. And unless it is run HARD it fouls the plugs after only a few hours of running.

I agree - the OEM carburetor is NOT right for this tractor!

Powershift or synchro?It'll go good with your deere baler!Now what you need is a 7-8 foot discbine to pull behind your 3020.A 9 footer would put a good load on it in heavy hay.I've run a 9 1/2 foot impeller discbine behind a IH 656D(hp about same as 3020).First gear only in heavy hay.Now use larger tractor on discbine.Use the 656 to run my deere 337 baler.Man that is a sweet combo.

Solid state ignition will fix the stumbling and spark plug problems. Unfortunately it does not help with the fuel consumption.

Here it is - picked it up at TSC on clearance. $49.99 marked down to $19.99.

My daughter was old enough to do some baby setting this past year and made a little change doing it. She gave me a $5 gift card for Christmas and honestly it was one of the nice/thoughtful gifts I've ever received. I wanted to buy something with it that was not a use it and toss it thing like a tee shirt. So I bought this tractor in part with the gift card so I'd have a permanent reminder on the shelf of when my daughter gave me a Christmas present!

OTOH - I have a friend with a for real Deere 3020 and in a lot of ways, I think it is a perfect haying tractor. Big enough hp/weight wise to handle a discbine and higher capacity square baler with wagon behind.

Ours has had electronic ignition for several years - unfortunately it hasn't helped stumbling/plug fouling a bit.

You can take a 4230 engine and put it in. Have to stretch the hood though.
