I HAVE a 1972--think that is the year 644 A Payloader. Was told the engine is the same as was in the JD 4320 tractor.
What can you fellas tell me about this engine--it is a turbo also.
Thanks len in michigan

Is there an identification tag for the engine by the injection pump Does it have a Roosa Master or a Bosch pump? Can you post the information that is staped on the injection pump?

Im not him but these are the tractors that share the same engine block as a 644A

They both use the 404T engine, which is a plus. The basic long block may work assuming the engines are close to the same year and the injector pumps are in the same spot and have the same bellhousing bolt circle. But you will have to change most of the accessories( waterpump, inj pump, exhaust and turbo) along with miscellaneous brackets linkages and rear seal. The tractor engine is about 110-120 HP@2250 rpm compared to the loader, which is 145HP@ 2400 rpm. It may be easier to find the correct industrial/construction engine,or rebuild what you have.

Thanks MSM, TIM, Tx. JIM and J.Sch.
The engine seems to be good starts a little hard when real cold. Installing a block heater the cannister type-it already has a small block heater--freeze plug type. It has the diesel starting fluid adapter, but I don't really like to use ether. Is it OK to use in the factory adapter while engine is rolling over.

Alice--THE EMAIL--the pump is a STANADYNE model 102908BRST another number is AR52416

Lenray: The trouble with trying to use a tractor motor in other applications is the injection pump and accessories are different. Also the block mounting holes can be different. I know switching combine motors into tractors can be hard on some models. So unless the block is bad I would look at fixing your engine. I have rebuilt motors without new sleeves and such IF they do not have excess wear. Using after market parts also allow you to save money.

Thanks for the info. Ronnie--my engine seems to be in very good condition; I was just wondering if it was used in other tractors as well as the Payloader. thank you
