Help on DC welder

Have before, now maybe more specific. Exiciter works , has 120 DC. No fire on main lugs. I have cleaned comnater (spell check no help for english police) I have small wire to large brushes,and wonder if hooking exciter leads could safely be spliced to those wires . If I could find what component to work on sure would help.OK some of you older welder guys having worked on these things help me. It is former government welder and I cannot find who was the manufacture. Thanks guys
