the plunger stayed on the starter when i pulled the solenoid off, does the starter have to be took off to get the plunger out? feels like there is something holding it from coming off.

It engages the gear drive. If you take the starter off you will find a drive pin or such that holds that bar that the coil hooks to. Does all of this make sense?

Yes the plunger is pinned to the lever that goes down to the starter bendix gear.

On that lucas starter it is not pinned. If you tilt it and mess with it the right way it will usually come. I say usually because the lever is held in with an eccentric bolt and depending on where its turned it may not leave enough room to disengage it. When you get it out post a picture of the part that engages the lever and i'll try to find a number. jstpa
