ford truck door key?

I installed a different driver's door on my 91 Ford F150. Door came from a salvage vehicle and I forgot to get the door key. I checked with the salvage yard (after the fact) and they don't keep keys from salvage vehicles.

I also don't know the VIN # from the salvage vehicle, although my auto parts store said VIN # is only good for newer vehicles and back 10 years if asking for a replacement key.

It's not a major problem to not have that key, as I can still unlock the passenger side door and hit the electric door unlock button. But I'd still like to get a key made and am wondering if a locksmith can provide a new key and if they can, what would be their cost estimate?

Thanks, Ron

pull the lock cylinder on the door, take it and your regular door key to a locksmith and they can code the lock cylinder to match your present key. cost about 20 or 30 dollars. easy peasey!!

Why not change the lock so your key works?Take off the inside panel and change it, not to hard of a job.

Easy to fix but not that easy. Take off the door panel and you need the stamp code number off of the cylinder. You might as well buy a new cylinder at NAPA or such and have it "keyed" to your ignition key by a lock smith. Not that costly but the quickest. Then you change out the cylinder. I had to do that with my dads 1946 chevy truck. The only door that has a lock is the passenger door. You lock the drivers door with a little bat wing knob. Then you slide across the seat and get out on the sidewalk side. Lastly you put in the key and UNlock the door handle. If you now try to open the door the handle just clicks around in a circle. You need to put the key in the little lock on the handle is RElock it. Now the handle works again and you can open the door. Neat

About 10 years ago the lockset pair only cost about 15 bucks with keys. Not worth messing with, swap the pair and be done with it.

What exactly is this truck door lock thingy you referred to?

Is it anything related to the truck key storage port located on the steering column that doubles as an ignition switch?

I don't think that would have the chip on the key being that old. If not, you can buy a matching ignition cylinder and door cylinders on Ebay, change them out your self much cheaper than getting a locksmith involved.

Or change the cylinder from the old door.

Or switch the cylinder with the passenger side.

It's an easy job, go on Youtube, several videos will walk you right through it.

I think only three of the cuts in the key are used for the door and the other three for the ignition switch, I may be wrong. This has happen to me several times, I hand a ford customer what I thought were there keys and they drive off  but there keys will not work on the ford I NEED THEM FOR :!:

No, no chip on a '91. Chips started coming along on Fords on the higher end cars around '95 or so, and slowly filtered down to the trucks around '97 or '98.

They haven't put numbers on the lock cylinders in a long time. I have a drawer full of them dating back to 1978, and none of them have numbers stamped into the lock cylinders.

i checked price and availability from ford on your drivers side lock cylinder. the part number you need is E7TZ1521984 A. the list price with the key is $89.38, but the part is discontinued. driver and passenger door use the same lock cylinder. when we run into this at the shop, way cheaper to recode the cylinder.

Wow. Great bunch of replies. I did save the old lock cylinder from the bad door, but it doesn't look like that easy of a job to change it so I didn't change it. I'll look again at the "difficulty" and re-think the whole thing.

Thanks to you all.
