The round lobe valve system... I'm not following this at all!

Watching around 1:00 minute, as they are turning it through by hand... There is way more overlap than any engine can run with, then the valves immediately start opening again as the "round lobe" cycles by... I see what pulls the valve closed, the scrawny little connecting rod, but I'm missing something, the timing is way off... Am I missing something?
