A friend just shared a posting about a carpenter who made a very intricate radial engine model. It was amazing for me. Maybe you will like it also. worldwarwings.com key words carpenter, intricate. His name is Ian. check it out. I don't know how to do links, maybe someone can do it. gobble

I have seen numerous cut-away radials at various museums but the best was at the Air Force museum in Dayton. You could push a button to see it work which gave a much better understanding of how it worked.

When I was teaching the Atlas missile engines in the AF the radial engine school was in the next bay. Those guys were always dropping their tools with a clang and a bang as the tool fell through the engine and hit the floor. To help them out one night we tied all their tools on strings and hung them from the engine. They were training on the B-50 radial engines. Because the props were still attached the engines were on high stands.

Not radials and not wood but check out the engine models at

Is that a new display? We were up there in 2013 and did not see that.We stopped coming and going to Lima to Red power Round Up.I would have enjoyed seeing how it runs,Mark

Thanks! He sure put a lot of thinking and work into that!

I was down at the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston a few years ago. They had several display engines, some cut aways.

They took the history of flight from the very beginning up through WW2 technology. What is amazing is how quickly the technology progressed! The first radials were developed around 1905, and within 20 years they were building highly complex and reliable engines.

Strange that automobile, truck, tractor engines didn't keep up, they were the same crude design for many years.
