Flat belt adjustment

Back in the day, I worked for a large Industrial Aluminum plant. As a Machinist, I would adjust many flat belts.
We had several machines that had large flat [b:85e8806be4]ENDLESS [/b:85e8806be4]belts.
Over the years, we discovered endless belts were adjusted different (opposite) from laced belts.
Never understood why!

I don't know but would suspect a laced belt could not be nearly as tight or it would pull the laces out.

Like I stated, I have no idea why, but there has to be a reason.
With a common flat laced belt, you normally tighten the end on the side it is running to.
May have something to do with length/width and construction material.
These belts were about 8 or 10 foot wide and made into a circle about 15 or 20 food diameter.
We were told they were made from Elephant hide.

Our TimeSaver Sander has a continuous Feed belt 40 inches wide and adjusts tighter on the end you want to move it away from. The sanding belt is also continuous and is the same to move left, tension the right. On flat belt power drives a barrel shape keeps it in the middle Jim

These particular belts were not driven with a power roll and all rolls were straight.
They were mounted to a moveable station and were called "Belt Wrapper"
The assembly moved under hydraulic power to a rewind arbor- the turning arbor rotated the belt, and the aluminum sheet was picked up between the belt and arbor. The roll of metal proceeded to wrap around the arbor and the wrapping assembly moved out of the way.
I guess you could say this was not your common belt, but never the less, adjustment was different.
Some of these belts were laced and they were adjusted in the common manner.
Lacings were prone to give problems, so the company went with continuous belts.

My grain leg belts go to the loose side. Talking about that, I ran a coon up mine and he landed in a 8" grain retarder. Had a hole in an elbow at this one and they found it then. I wondered why I was getting some back legging.
