Called O'Reillys about that fuel pump. He found it right away (after pulling that extra 0)- $26 and change. I have to pick it up tomorrow.

Do all of those Ford V8's (like this 330) take the FL1-A oil filter that my school buses always ran?

No there where exceptions , but for the most part they did . Old Fords , Mopar and I H i know quiet a bit about them . I have been teaching the guys at my O Riles a lot of the old stuff and what you can use inplace when the part for that piece is not listed anymore. Did two Holley carbs for two guys and there I H S model trucks with the 404 gas , They looked everywhere for a carb kit not finding one for the listing . Well that same carb was used on 383-400 2 bbl. engines on Mo Pars , yep they still list a kit for them and it will work and work just fine. as for the FL1 fliter you can also use that filter on some Mo Pars also . yep it fits,

When in highschool, I had a 1968 Mustang with a 289 4bbl. Somewhere here on a shelf a still have an FL1A for it.

I still have my '66 mustang and that is exactly what is on it. :D

when I worked for Allis Chalmers dealer I had a Ford with 260 engine and used a filter that fit the D 24 tractor cost less than $.75 at dealer's cost

Is not the PH8a and the FL1-A the same filter except from different companys? I know the PH8A is what we used on the Ford tractors as we thought it was a better filter than a different filter that I am thinking was the FL1-A but it has been too many years.

PH8A and FL1 should interchange. Everyone has opinions on oil filters, but I gave up on Fram filters long ago. I know they may make a decent filter, but I used to run nothing but fram filters until I purchased a new pickup with the filter laying on the side, and every cold start the truck had a knock for a short time (it was having to refill the filter each startup). Talked to the dealer and he asked what type filter I was using, and when I told him Fram, he told me to get the fram off and put a decent filter on it (recommended AC filter which at the time had anti drain back valve). Knock went away, and so did my purchasing Fram filters. I am not loyal to any one filter, but try to look to get one with the anti-drain back valve in it now. Not a big issue where the filter is mounted vertically with the inlet up so the filter remains full all the time. I do prefer Wix filters, but I won't always pay the price for them.

I don't know anything about filter numbers or what fits what. In the early 1970's I was working with Hastings on a filter prototype plastic base. They took me on a tour of the manufacturing machinery. What I noticed was out of one machine several different company names was coming out of the machine with the only change was the color and printing on the outside. The filters were exactly the same. The fellow told me that all filter company's work together to do this on low volume items to keep the cost of manufacturing so the sale price could be within reason.

Yep lot of stuff comes off the same line painted a different color and a different part # . Had a problem on my 95 Dodge with the water drain and sensor due to the age and cold weather it started leaking . Ok so call Goat store , no got can have in two days , not good enough so how to come up with a fuel filter that does not have the huge hole in the bottom and do away with that 29 dollar filter and not spend 45 buck on the new part . so i started digging and looking up fuel filters that had the same thread and dia. Since i have had the truck i have never found any water in the filter or the water trap , Lucky probably . I change fuel filters often. So after looking a bit i came up with a wix part # and call my local O'Riley's and had it by 4 so the truck was down for one day not two and spent 9 bucks verses the 45 for the sensor and another 29 for that filter. Cummins recommends Fleet Guard filters and so does I H , Are they far better ?? When i was a youngster at the construction co. we used nothing but WIX and had a room full of all the wix filters . Now as to whom makes the filters for Ford Chrysler and everybody else i have no idea , probably who ever gives the low bid. When i had all Ford car and truck i would buy the fliters by the case when they had a special from one of the ford dealers that i delt with and the partmanage would give me a call and tell me that hey we have a special on filters going on ya need a case as they would figure out by the case to around a buck and a half a filter. So i would get two cases maybe four if a buddy wanted one .

Cummins recommends Fleetguard, now Cummins Filtration. They are the only filter company owned by an engine manufacturer.

Baldwin makes the best filters for fuel on a diesel engine. Cummins says 5 micron minimum for the common rail engines. Ram puts on 7 micron filters, Baldwin is 2 micron. CR Injectors are over $3500 for a set of new Bosch on the 5.9 and 6.7's. Rebuilt Bosch injectors are junk.

At my old job, the neighbor opened one of the first quick lube places in our area. He was totally independent of any of the big companies. At that time (last 1980s) he told me there were only two oil filter manufacturers in the country, and they made all the filters for every brand. He bought generic white filters from one of them for a long time.

I have had three defective Carquest/wix filters in the last few mounts. They leak under the seal were it seals again the filter. When you lift the seal I had no problem seeing the issue they have bad welds. I found the issue with other wix filters on the shelf. I stopped by the store and found others with the same issue. I am back to stocking Purolater filters NO WELDS under the seal :D They cost a few bucks more but its not worth a few bucks to kill a engine.

One in the pix is new leaked right out of the box it has a crack.

Bad filter

While we are on filters and while I was having filter issues I had just removed this filter from a 03 chebby 5.3. The oil is changed every 3K religiously with 5/30 synthetic blend oil. Anyone want to take a guess at whats wrong with it and what is causing the filter to look like this...

Same dirty filter center, right filter same changed every 3K religiously with 5/30 synthetic blend

I do around 30 to 50 oil changes a mo I get to see my share of filters... The one on the chebby I have learned to look for this issue...

The Ford tractors had filter laying on side and never had that drain back problem, everytime you changed a filter you had full filters of oil running down side of block just as soon as filter was loosened, but was probably 20 years ago when all had left so filters might have changed. At that time the Ph8A was about half again as heavy as the others so we figured it should have more filtering material inside.
