Kawasaki FB460V Motor questions.

Hey guys, I have a Gravely wing mower with the Kawasaki FB460V motor on it. It is a recoil start and always starts on the 2nd pull. Good thing that is does because it pulls very hard. I don't think the Automatic compression relief is working. I've owned and used this mower since 1990. I don't think the compression relief is working. How do I check and how do I fix it. The motor runs well, I add a little oil every 8 hours, or 4 weeks for me. It test out with 60lbs compression, which I thought that was a little high. I've never done anything to the motor except grind the valves a couple years ago.

If it were mine and it started on the second pull every time, I don't care how hard it pulled, I would leave it alone unless I couldn't pull
it anymore. I have a tired old 5hp Brigs on a mini bike that wouldn't start at all 4 years ago. I filed the valves to eliminate the
compression relief and it has been running ever since.

Thanks for the information. Problem is my wife who enjoys mowing, and would do so when I'm at work, can't start the thing. It pulls like a 45# compound bow. I was thinkg about putting a little starter on it, but I was concerned that the starter would turn it over.

That engin is in my opinion, the best air cooled engine ever made. I have ones with many, many, many hours on them and never been apart. I can tell you some funny stories if you want.

There is a cam lobe device that runs the compression release on the cam. It holds one of the valves open slightly. If your valves are loose it cant do this. Check and bring them up to specs.

60 psi compression doesn't sound unreasonable to me. That is what I have witnessed on a new Briggs engine. I would think after the compression release goes off it would be over 100 psi.

In my opinion, that is one of the best single cylinder engines Kawasaki ever made.

Like the other guy said, be sure to check the valve clearance. Also, How long is your rope? A really short rope will work you to death.

Thank you guys for your help. I'm going to start tearing that down and so I can check the valves. The rope is long and strong. Thank goodness if it ever breaks I'll go thru the side of the shed.
