Was looking for a coil for a fairbanks Type J4B3 magneto. I ran across marine coils for FM mags. The marine coil looks the same and is priced about $20 bucks less.

Anyone ever try to put a marine coil in a tractor magneto?

a coil is a coil and a mag is a mag body mite be different to mount on motor but the function of the mag doesent change so the coil doesent care which mag it is installed as long as it fits.

I agree, make sure the clearance and fit is correct. Make sure the purchase is conditional on that with the rite to return. Electrical components are often a one way purchase. If it does not fit it should not require your acceptance of it. Jim

Most F-M mags have the FM style housing and mount the same way held by the allen screws , but there are difference in some coils some have one tower and some have two . If you do a google images search you will see what I mean. If you keep shopping for your correct coil you may find a better price too.

I would GUESS the "marine coil" is more moisture proof/corrosion resistant.

MAY be priced lower because of a surplus of/low demand for NOS marine coils, perhaps?

I replaced the coil on an old Remington chain saw with a similar sized one out of a "junk" pile. Had to machine some different mounting holes. It worked fine and has been going for 25 years. Coil is a coil is a coil, maybe.
