Good Day Fishing

Loaded up and went out on the ice today. Smallish lake about 30 miles east of home. Roughly a foot of good ice, so it was safe to drive
on. Drilled a couple holes and set up my portable shelter. A little before 5 I got into the crappies. Caught my limit of 10 in about a
half an hour. Couldn't keep a line in the water at times. Very exciting. We can use 2 lines on the ice in Minnesota so I was busy! Packed
everything up and headed for home to start filleting. Fried up a little for me and the little one and put the rest in the fridge. Might
go again tomorrow, but it's going to be awful cold again with a high of ten below zero. A lot fewer people out fishing in this weather!

in-too-deep- WOW! I love crappies! Would love to see some pics of a crappie that you can fillet. Down here, there is no limit on them but, they aren't that big. 10" to 12" is considered 'big' around here.

You got my mouth watering for fried crappie.

Thanks.

I wish it was warm enough to fish around here!

This monster got a chance to live another day. Threw it back after a quick photo. They drained that lake a few months later for fear of a dam breech. Darned shame...

Wish it would freeze enough here to ice fish or warm up and melt the skim of ice off. Nothing is better than crappie out of cold water. I think they are mushy when they come out of warm water.

When I do go fishing it usually is during the winter. We have a few small farm ponds around here that produces some pretty good sized fish. I used to drive down to the Mississippi river, but for that the farm ponds are more fun to fish. BTW, it's -8 this morning here. Be a pretty brutal day on the ice.

You would not get me out on that ice at a foot thick, would have to be sollid ice to bottom of lake.

An ice fisherman with the handle "in-too-deep" kinda puts a picture in your head! I can climb towers, stacks, and structure, but the thought of going out on ice is beyond me. Perhaps with experience/ training/ exposure, but for now I am in awe of those that venture out. Congrats on the catch! Aaron

"crappies"
Sure glad I did not catch any of that. LOL!!!

Around here we call them "sac a lait" translated to English means milk bag or bag of milk.
Some also call them "white perch" because there is a different "black perch"
Still good eating no matter what you northerners call them.

We usually go after perch in spring just before of during the spawn.
You get about 2 years out of 5 good fishing with perch because of cannibalism.

And I am with some of the others.
No way am I trusting ice to drive on it.

Here in Wisconsin once the ice gets thick the lakes look like a Wall Mart parking lot. Some folks push it and break through in the spring. Their rewarded with a soggy vehicle, towing bill and a fine from the DNR. The rivers often take life.

The best fishing is done on what we call first ice. That can be anywhere from 1"-3". I've been on 1" of ice and caught a bucket full of bluegills. One foot of hard ice will hold up a train. No fear of falling through ice that thick.

When I was about 12 years old I went ice fishing a few times with the neighbor kids, an old friend of their family would take us over on the Mississippi backwaters. Don't remember ever catching much and now and then the ice would let out a crack like a shotgun. Only ice I've been on since has solid ground under it.
