Going with my nephew tomorrow to look at a Case 530 with a loader. All I know so far is it runs good and the brakes don't work. I have been
around mostly late John Deere 2 cylinders my whole life. This tractor has the case o matic transmission. Is there anything in particular I need to
look for? Are they good tractors? They are asking $3500.00 for it. Thanks in advance for any advise.

That sounds high for the condition. I had a 1020 Deere, gas with a Freeman loader, hydraulic bucket, that I tried to sell a few years ago for $3500. It was well worn, but always housed, all there and everything worked. I couldn't get that out of it. I finally put it back in the barn for another year until I could trade it for something that I wanted more.

If it were me I would shy away from a case-o-matic. They are nothing but problems from my experience. We had an 830 with case-o-matic and it was always slipping. Our 730 standard shift never gave us a problem, and seemed to have more power than the 830. Just my two cents that ain't worth a penny.

Hi, I had a Case 530CK l/b with 188D. It had a Johnson bar and a direct drive lever. I did some repairs but nothing compared to work it did over the 30 yrs. I had it. The brakes are quite easy to fix if you are mechanically enlined. I was so sad to see the back of it. Ed Will

In response to Gary from Muleshoe, don't worry too much about the Case-O-Matic. It is basically uses a torque converter in place of a clutch, then there is a lever to lock the torque converter when you get moving. I have Case-O-Matic on a 630 and an 800, works well. Biggest problem will be keeping fluid filled, the 530 probably uses the same reservoir for the Case-O-Matic and the hydraulic fluid. Hi-tran is a good choice.

Case-0-Matic tranny are torque converter driven. They balance engine power to transmission load without shifting gears or useing a TA. They also had a hydraulic clutch pack to lock the converter solid like modern PUs with OD auto trannies except the COM on the Case tractors was manually controlled. What you called sliping was the converter adjusting to engine rpms and drawbar loads. The converter developed 3.14 X the output torque of the engine.

I bought a case 530ck loader that the breaks didnt work. All I had to do was clean up the balls and ramps inside and it worked alot better.
Its actually pretty fun to drive with 4gears, High/low,and the shuttle shift.
