Dipstick Oil Warmer

I know an old diesel tractor engine does not like to start when it's cold outside, So my question is: would a oil warmer make a difference when trying to start a diesel engine in the winter time? Never used one before, and don't know anything about a oil warmer.

We used them years ago in WV, where it seldom gets below the teens in the winter. They worked good for us, but don't know how well they would work if it is really cold.

Tried one on a big Olds V8 one time. It didn't warm anything except it looked like it burned the oil that came in contact with it. If you're in a cold place it will never keep up with what a diesel engine, which in many cases has a larger oil capacity, will need and if you're not in a cold place you won't need it. Invest your money in a good block heater or a tank heater. By "tank heater" I mean the type that hooks up to the block drain and runs up to the upper radiator hose. Get a 1500w and it'll keep anything warm. My neighbor has a 50 year old Ford 5000 that sits outside with the tank heater plugged in and it starts up in any kind of weather.

Dealt with them years ago WILL GIVE A FAILING RATING they may warm the oil a bit but do not put heat on the top end where combustion takes place.

use a block or coolant heater instead. replace the freeze plug , but if that is too much of a hassle, put one in the lower radiator hose. easy to do and pretty inexpensive at most auto parts stores as NAPA

They do help due to warm oil but I have also seen them where they burned the oil and that i not a good thing to happen since that can cause engine problems

You can improve diesel starting by warming the combustion chamber. A coolant heater warms the water jacket that surrounds the combustion chamber. A glow plug in the air intake manifold warms the air entering the combustion chamber. An oil heater will not do much to warm the combustion chamber, most of the heat will stay in the oil pan.

They are a waste of money. Heat the coolant. I have had good luck with a lower radiator hose heater. Twenty five to thirty bucks at AutoZone or TSC depending upon radiator hose size. I have put them on 5 small diesel tractors without a problem. Worst case scenario you have to replace the lower hose if it doesn't work out.

My brother used to work for Cummins Bridgeway Power Gen. He was telling me that all the 12,16,20 cylinder generators in the hospitals have battery blanket heaters on each battery, multiple coolant heaters, and oil pan heaters that are epoxied or somehow other way attached to the bottom of the outside of he oil pan. Guess they wanted them to start!

Bought one years ago. Never got used. Was about 3' long, dipstick in tractor was about 10", no way that would fit.

If the engine rolls over good an electric hot air gun in the intake will do a heck of a lot to get the engine going in cold weather. Combine that with a block heater and you're golden!
