Just got back in from checking on the cattle. Had a stupid heifer walk clear across the field from the feed, barns and water. Stuck her head through the fence and got hung up. She was right by the bunks at 6:30 and missing at 8:30. I had to walk clear across the field and down a deep raven to get her head out of the fence. She ran straight back to the barn. You could see her tracks in the snow. Straight out and straight back. What the HECK was she doing???? She had better have a good calf or she will be hamburger!!!! Stupid is genetic.

Oh, gosh, I don't think the livestock have a total monopoly on the stupid when cold thing!

Just a little while ago I watched some young "humans" wander around in the loose baggy shorts favored by ghetto denizens that are into playing punkinthumpers (in a warmer clime) and they were also wearing "flip flops".

Doesn't seem like appropriate garb here on the tundra at -15?F, but who am I to judge?

Wondered that myself ,at least You, JD , were on Your toes and Yours is still alive,.. I had a cow got her leg in a gas tank strap hanging off the seat of a VAC case parts tractor way back in the cedar woods thiket , tractor has been there for 4 yrs , same cows around it for at least 6 yrs ..she must a been there a couple days before I came thru yesterday and found her ,dead ,no idea why she got there in the 1st place or could not easily get out ??? . I have been down with a bad cold all week , usually run the fences when I take hay out , but the weather has been so nasty , been feeding them square bales at the barn , ,if I am sik ,my cows probably are too , gonna be in single digits tonite, was in the 50s Saturday with rain .. couple days ago , the whole herd bolted like the ky derby for the gateway and run out in the hay field across the road as I was taking hay and feed thru the gate with the tractor ,.. usually they follow me like the pied piper,,.. yes, a few came bak for the feed rite away, with my calling ,and banging the bucket . but the rest were plumb ornery, they would not scatter and run, just stood there eating the taller fall grass .i just could not herd them ,.they were doing no harm,, I put feed on my car trailer and led all them bak in the pasture ,.. all the while I sized up their health and realized I had some pneumonia syptoms sneakin in on me ,.with the heavy rains and roller coaster temps ,no wonder they were sick and half crazy stupid ,,btw , the feed and round bale was gonna be set in the warm cedars thiket in site of where the cow was THEN probably hung up on the parts tractor ?? . BUT ,the ol 'devil run the cows out and made me play his time wasteing game instead of hauling back over the rise ,I had to drop the hay where they would see it so I could gather them all in easily, that took most of an hour ,and it had started to COLD DRIZZLE too ,Now I needed to go get some cold medicine for my self as well as the cows before the feed store closed ,my own medicine coulda waited til Saturday .when I got bak ,, it was dark , but I medicated the feed for the cows and made a nice spred in tubs and barrel halves so they all got some,. Saturday morning early, I had to go bak to town for our county government mtg,.finaly got to play with the cows again around 2 pm , I had no IDEA ,one of 35 were missing either ,topt over the rise ,and kinda thought the cow was havin a calf, on the other side of the old tractor . so I cautuosly walked down there, only to see that she wasn't moving and was still a little warm ,,but dead as can be .yes ,in spite of the rain , I coulda and shoulda counted them all the day and nite before ,. but I did not,.But You JD ,knew one was missing . That Is WHY You other more successful farmers than me are farming much better than me ,.. ,. you gotta constantly stay on top ,.. funny thing , today I was talkin with a hi school chum we affectionately call the One Armed Bandit , he needs more hay for all his cows in his salvage yard pasture,.. I told him about my cow ,, and he said he or his DAd in 40yrs has never had a cow OR Calf get in trouble in the yard ,,.other than a split hoof,,.. well go figure ,,.I am starting to think I need to drag the disc ,cultipaker , hayrake and tedder away from the idiots ,,.a fella just cant never be careful enuf..

Must be genetic lol. We always keep a couple more replacement heifers than we really need, always a crazy one in the crowd. Had one 'take off' during a storm last year (she was the first one to calve) went through or over two fences and ended up a mile+ away & we didn't miss her until the storm was over. The calf survived, but will be next winters beef, no ears, short tail and a frostbit foot. She went to the sale barn !!!!

Yabbut, we slaughter stupid cattle to cleanse the gene pool. Somehow mankind thinks that every human being should be saved.

Saw a fellow in sandals yesterday, 4 inches of snow, 30 mph wind, at the gas station. Admitted it was not the best choice in footwear.

As already posted, genetics suck.
I grew up on a dairy farm of about 70 cows. While they were all ear-tagged, registered Holsteins, mom had a name for each cow.
There was one cow that she called "Trouble". This cow must of been half deer, because she could clear any fence we had. She would just gracefully jump over any fence on our property.
We finally sold the cow because there wasn't one that could keep her in. Well, it turned out that her first calf was a heifer.
When this heifer got to be of age, it was "Trouble" all over again. "Trouble's" offspring was the same way.
We never found out of she was a good milker or not. She got sold before we found out.

Oh, you have those idiots there too? But they are so "cool" or whatever the fad word is for someone all the other little darlings want to emulate and be just like so that they can express their individuality. And then thye complain because the school is "too cold" and some administrator turns up the heat.......

If I did not know any better I would say you must have holsteins. The only thing dummer than a dairy cow is the person who milks them(which we did for 20 years).LOL Tom

Cattle are rocket scientists compared to sheep. Ever look at a sheeps skull? Not a lot of room in there for the hard drive

You can move all the implements & they will still figure a way to commit suicide. Had one step inside the hay ring and got leg caught between two rings, broke it, laid there & died before I found her.

Heard a story about an older lady who has about 70 alpacas in northern Ohio. Three of them broke through an electric fence and walked on the thin ice and broke through. She went in to save them and got herself in trouble. A guy delivering oil or propane nearby saw what happened and got her and two of the critters out of the pond. I'm not sure who was dumber in this case.

Hey, speaking honestly, as a guy who owns both sheep and cattle, neither one is going to win a Nobel Prize anytime soon. At least when a sheep panics and tries to run you over you have a fighting chance.
