I have a JD 4430 that has a quad range transmisson. ACD ranges work fine but when you try to use B range gears 1-4 it just grinds but reverse works just fine. If you travel in reverse then shift to Anotber gear in B range it doesn't grind and it works like normal.

Start by checking for sagged cab mounts and for looseness in the range select linkage.

Check for endplay in the range shift shaft between the lever and the trans case. (IIRC, .005".)

Adjust linkage so lever is in appropriate place when detent in transmission for "B" drops into place.

If no help, there's a shift collar or fork problem down at the lower shaft in the transmission.

Yes check those things over but,, you most likely will be servicing the bottom shaft, which is a big job. B-range is the one that usually gets used first as you bump out of park, so it gets raked a bit each time and gets the edge of the gear ground down, reverse is still working because of the way the gears are beveled when you back up it will take some of the slack up and allow it to hold a bit as you back up. To service the bottom shaft the cab needs pulled final drives removed, rockshaft lifted off and split at the trans/clutch housing,, a big job,,and a pricey job too...

My 4040 started jumping out of B range back in about 1991 for just the reason you describe. That one cost me around $3500 to have fixed back then. They replaced three gears along with several bearings and other assorted parts.
