Well. My dad has called it and says that we are better off buying another tractor with 540, our 2840 has cost us so much money it's not worth investing another 6,000 to maybe have it work another 8 months. My dad had mentioned the 4430. We need something with 540 for the baler and the disc bine, and another chore tractor to replace the 2840. Yes I know it's a huge size difference but my dad thinks the 4430 will do fine. Now I'm not too familiar and will ask but also do my research, are the 40 and 50 series still 540 PTO? And another question, would a 4630 have 540? My dad would like to pull a disc with the 4430 but if you add a rolling basket then you need more power? Would weighted, duals, and possibly turning the fuel injection pump up help? Or would I want to leave the FI alone. We mainly avoid wet fields we don't play in the mud necessarily. But our ground has not one stone and it breaks up very nice, 2 pass chisel and disc and she is ready to plant. A basket would be nice for more fine breakup and to make a level surface after your last pass *beans need to be on level ground so the flex head doesn't eat dirt*.

You are thinking in the correct direction to get away from a 2840. If you go with a 4430 try to get one that is 1976/77,above serial number 60,637,, they have many good improvements over the early ones, "But" a 4440 would be a much better choice if finances will allow it, the 4630,4640's have 1,000 RPM shafts only and they would not be a good choice,,

2840s are generally considered a poor tractor. A 4430 is a huge upgrade.

4430s are a very popular tractor. They're small enough to make a nimble chore tractor, and big enough to go to the field and work. Try to get a 1977 model, They had a few upgrades that make them a little better than earlier models. I have a 1973 and a 1977 and the '77 shifts a lot nicer.

4440s and 4450s were also ave 540 PTO. 4630s were 1000 only

You didn't mention how wide a disk. I pull a 15' BWF with a 20' spring tine harrow behind it, and it's all the 4430 wants on my hills. My 4430 is turned up to 135 hp from factory 125. that's all the further I'd go, though many claim much more out of them...

For what you are wanting to do I think a 4630 or 4640 would be a better fit than a 4430. Bigger frame and more power. It would be a huge step up from your 2840. They were not Deeres best tractor. Too much power for the transmission. Two speed issues were a major problem and expensive to repair.

4430/4440 would be a fine tractor.Still have 540 pto.4630/40 and bigger are 1000 only. A 44 will have enough power to do most anything. And you still have the big ones for the hevier work.

We currently pull a John Deere 210 15w I think. But
we pull it with our 4520 and that makes it work.

Are you referring to pulling a 15 ft JD 210 disk harrow? If a 210 disk harrow loads your 4520 then you need to think about cylinder compession or check fuel delivery

Have the same disc and want to get a bigger one. My 4320 plays with it. If I don't have the duals on it and get into a good hill in worked ground, traction can be a slight issue. With duels it'll pull it anywhere with lots of power to spare.

I worked at a John Deere dealership in 1990.We made a living on the 28 and 2940's.Poor specimen of tractor. As several other series of John Deere's.When you get one your paying for the green paint,in which I don't care for anyway.Don't know how some people can get so wrapped up in brands.I've got some farmer neighbors that think if it wasn't for John Deere the world would starve. And if it wasn't for Ford everybody would be walking.

(quoted from post at 14:46:15 01/08/16) 4440 has the 466 ci and the 4430 has 404 ci engines. The 4440 cost more but there is no replacement for displacement. Both good motors.

How do you think the high HP 4 cyl(276 cid/4.5L) JD engines of today compare to the 466(7.6L) engines?

Hard to say? They haven't been here for 4 series
worth... The 7800 runs the 466.? Everybody talks
about the 40,50,55,60's?,00. On how reliable they
are. Same motor and rear end? I'm an electrician
but own my fair of equipment, 466 is a good
motor7.6L.

In just chatting at the Deere dealership they told me 4430 is a good tractor but can have rear end issues. I'm not sure what was meant but any kind of rear end issue on a tractor is costly. I'd go with a 4440. I LOVE mine. It is dualed up. I used to have another that had singles that I sprayed with and square baled with. In a moment of stupidity I traded it when I bought a new planter. I had just gotten a 7800. I love the 7800 with FWA for chores but it takes 40 acres to turn around. I should have kept that dang 40.

The one I still have was turned up to about 150 horse when I bought it. I used to pull a 36 foot minimum till drill. She did it no problem for many a year. The combine, 8430, 7800, and 4440 all have that same engine. It is rock solid.

I have a 1976 4430 quad range. It has 540/1000 PTO.triple remotes on the back. It has 7000 hrs. The turbo has been replaced, right rear axle, clutch twice, and power shift problem once.

It runs hot on 90 degree days. Put in a heat buster radiator with no change.

Yes, here's a picture. It makes it work what can i say. 5th gear 1900rpms. Goes about 2 1/2 mph and she roars

Our 8430 and 7720 combine have the 466.... They are a great reliable engine from what I've seen. Would like to have that size engine around the farm more.

The JD 210 tandem that I owned wouldn't load a 60 HP tractor.

I sure though JD new gen tractors such as your 4520 traveled faster that 2-1/2 mph in 5th gear @ 1900 rpm.
