Any Northwest Indiana members on the board?

Hello,

I am new to the board and tractors. I have a Farmall 230 I am restoring.

Soon I will be moving towards the engine. I have used several auto machine shops for my auto engine work, but don't know of any in the NW Indiana that are familiar with tractor engine work.

My next step is to pick up the phone, but wanted to get the opinion/suggestion from some experienced folks on the board.

This is a recent photo. I have since reinstalled the axles and PTO with all new seals and gaskets. Everything looked excellent inside. Getting ready to split it and start on the engine.

Many thanks,

Greg

From Chesterton to the east rural Pine twp. Now a professor at St. Cloud State in MN. Looks like an ultimate rebuild. Where are
you?

if you have an automotive machine shop that grinds crankshafts, they should be able to do a tractor no problem, as long as they have the model number of the engine. also, i prefer to get my main and rod bearings from the machine shop, to be sure everything is machined correctly. also, have them re-size the rods and do the wrist pins. i use a machine shop up near ohare airport that does custom race engines. they have no problem doing old tractor stuff, and they get a kick out of the old engines!!

If the shops you're using for automotive engine rebuilding is fully equipped and competent they'll have no problems doing your engine - if they have all the specs.
I've got a few hours on a farmall 230.A good tractor!

Howdie neighbor.
I'm on Oak Hill Rd. near Waverly.
Where abouts are you located?
It's been a long time since I've used a machine shop.
Owen's auto part's in Michigan city used to have a good machine shop,
their counter left a lot to be desired.
My old Boss used Van Senus auto in Hammond In. to machine con rods
for Joy air compressors.

Van Sanus

Steve,
We are almost next door neighbors. I am on Wagner just south of Rt. 20.

I used to use Van Sanus exclusively for years, but haven't since they sold out to a conglomerate. They did my machine work on about seven engines and probably four times that for my dad.

I found a place in Valpo that I am going to call. I haven't tore into the engine yet. I am hoping I just need to install rings and run a hone down the cylinders. I will mic the crank journals and check the bearings and at least plastigage it.

I do want to have a valve job done, just because I have it apart and I like to do it right the first time and not tear into it again.
