Half done on welding table project

About half done on my welding table for the shop. Plan on putting wheels on it so I can wheel it up to the wall and attach it, then if I have a larger project to do on it I can detach it and wheel it out. Also planning on putting a shelf in it and a small overhang on one end for welding rod storage.

Gosh Alan, that's real nice looking work and nice and square and level. That's great craftsmanship. I like the band saw too. Would like to be the proud owner of both.

Good luck, always use them in good health.

Thank you. And it doesn't even wobble lol. All checked out level before welding. Is a little challenging as the angle iron Im using is from and old fuel barrel stand and is a little more than 90 degrees. The band saw comes in handy. My brother had bought a couple of them on a sale. We fixed them up and put a new blade in. They work ok but the blade will come off if a tooth catches the metal wrong.

Great indoor project. What kind of top are you going to use. Trouble I have with tables, is there isn't enough room on top, no matter how many I have. Stan

Planning on using a sheet of steel on it. I know what you mean. An empty table is nice but they are hard to find lol.

Welded for years in the Boilermakers...
Wanted a wire welder for a long time but didn't want to have a large one with the big argon bottle. Now you can get small amps flux wire welders. Mine is small..30 - 100 amp. Now with all the projects in mind, I need an oxy/acetylene setup. Partial to the small...2 - 3 litre bottles with regs and torches. Around 250$,,but I am hearing those small bottles are basically "throw aways"?

Alan,
That looks like a great size table. If you ever had something really big you can put a sawhorse on one end.

I see you said you were using a sheetmetal top. If you are planning very light fabrication that would work.

If you are doing a lot of work, I would suggest 1/2" top if you can find one. Ive found over the years of fabbing, many times on the weld table, its my fabrication/hammering/cutting/plasma cutting table as well. You'll want heavy casters too if hammering on it.

I was very fortunate to pick one up at an auction for scrap price.

Good luck,
Rick

Will be mostly light duty work. I do have a very heavy built table on wheels if I need something bigger. That one could probably hold well over a 1000 pounds, this one not that much. Wouldn't mind a good heavy top but cost factor might be a concern. Will keep looking as I do like that idea.

Why would you not want a wire welder with gas... I use argon and might have to fill the bottle twice a year. So handy to grab that wire and shoot the weld to it.

If you have a wire feed, consider welding a steel ring on the side of the frame. Handy spot to park the gun between welds. I torch broken coil springs lengthwise...makes a lot of rings fast. I had a cheap auction find about the size of yours, added junk 3/16 plate on top, and a shelf under. Very handy size for many projects.

Just a thought--make the top plate about 3" bigger per side to allow room for clamping down material before welding, Otherwise it looks great.

I did just what you mentioned on my wire feed welder cart. I built an adjustable height rod with a half loop on the top for the gun. That is handy. This one will mostly be used with an older arc welder. I have my dads first welder he bought back in the 1950s.

You are right, even with the drop in scrap prices, the price on new steel hasnt seemed to drop with it.

I priced one inch plate the other day, it was $$$.

Ditto on the 3" apron for clamping and at least a 1/4" top.
Sometimes its easier to tack weld a piece to the table top for fabbing, then just grind the tack off.

nice looking table
Is there enough space to get your toes under the bar when you're standing close?
just a convenience thing, but I always try to build room for that sort of stuff. I hate bending over tables unsteady on my feet.
