ih 1086 control center vs jd 4440 soundguard

You're likely to start a JD/IH war. The JD guys will hammer the 86 series, noise level, shift levers, hyd controls, etc. We have 2 86 series tractors on our farm, they do what we ask, are always reliable, and you get used to the quirks of the cab. Everyone will say how hard it is to get in the cab with the location of the shift levers on the LH side, that's why I get in on the RH side of the cab, nothing there.

If you live on flat land the IH is just fine. Try opening the door on a slop up hill, or closing the door if it is open facing downwards. Carhart coats like to get caught on the shifters on the left side while bailing out in a hurry. Deere cabs are easy to get in and out of in a hurry, just only from one side. You can not wear a baseball hat while hooking up to a implement. You need to press your face against the window to see over the fuel tank to see your draw bar. The IH is a good strong tractor though. Deere was just a few years ahead of them in comfort,

Well I think the 4440 is more user friendly then the 1086. The hydraulic levers are higher up easier to reach .The power steering and hydraulics are faster . The transmission more gears that can be shifted while moving without grinding . We had both and just liked the JohnDeere better we now have all JD. The JD has a quieter cab but is smaller with only 1 door . But in the wind The IH doors can be hard to hold on to . We also had a 986 and a 966 . Now if you do not put on a lot of hours the IH most of the time are cheaper to buy.

The 86 cabs are not bad if you get used to them. I do love my green ones, but am looking to buy a 1486 to haul manure to a farm I have 7 miles away. The IH with 42-46 rubber on it will go way faster on the road than a Deere. Plus I can buy one at 1/2 the price. Both are good tractors.

Bought a IH 1486 new and kept it six months. Hated the cab and the ride. Bought a one year old JD 4440 and still own it with 14,000 hours on it. The IH 1486 is a good rugged tractor with a great engine but a horrible cab compared to the JD cab. The shifters are the biggest issue. They just are always in the road.

Bang for your buck a IH 86 series is hard to beat used. They will bring half what a JD 40 series will.

I have a 1086 and a 4650. Like others said both have strengths and weaknesses. I put those struts on the 1086 doors and made them much handier and less prone to wind damage. The 4650 cab is a bit quieter. Shift-wise, the 4650 is a power shift so no comparison there. Also the diff lock on the 1086 is more user friendly for loader work. For loader work the 1086 having two doors is nice, the Deere has better hydraulics. Lengthening the hyd levers on the 1086 made using them nicer but now I have to be careful going out the right door.

I'm posting my reply without having read anyone else's. I figure I will go back later and see where we have common thoughts.

I've currently got both. The 1086 is actually gone but I use my 886 everyday for chores. They don't have many differences. Here's what I notice:

The 86 series has a far superior cab feel. It feels much larger and only has the "tailpipe" to obstruct view. The rear window hinges far out. I like where the radio and HVAC controls are much better. I think the three point is more responsive to small movements and easier to feather as well as the PTO the same. I really like how a door is operational on either side. I don't use the right hand door because I have a joystick loader stand in the way but it is nice to open that door and operate the hydraulics or loader from the ground. I'm hugely annoyed by the forward hinged doors and just about trip myself getting out about once a day. I think the cab is noisier. The seat does not offer much movement for someone who is 6'4" but the cab is wider so I can sit sideways a bit. I hate the vinyl seat - it makes for a sweaty rearend. I think the IH cab stays much cleaner and less dusty than the Soundguard cab. I like that I can see the hitch without smacking my head on the rear glass. Although I wish it had powershift/quad shift, I shift through the gears on my 886 like a semi truck and never grind the gears. I find that I shift less because the TA is just the right jump down when moving bales, etc. Why in the world they couldn't put a tilting wheel in that tractor is beyond me. There's no way to get that steering wheel out of my way - it's like the old 4020!

The door on the 4440 is far more user friendly. It gets out of your way and isn't blown shut by the slightest breeze when you are half way in. The throttle lever and remotes are in an excellent place for the user. I think the gauge package is far more reliable/accurate. I trust them more. I really dislike looking around that exhaust and the door frame. I also am driven nuts by the 8 inches of space between the clutch pedal and the wheel well. I think it is harder to keep a Soundguard cab looking nice because you are so close to cloth areas your pliers are rubbing on them, etc. My 4440 is ready for its third cab kit. I like that I can start the tractor from the ground and have it limbering up while I load the cab for my day. I do hate the manual shutoff setup, though. The plastic around the cable pull can be broken pretty easily when you leave your tractor at Deere for repairs. Don't ask how I know. There sure isn't much floor space for my big cup and other things in a JD cab. The quad shift goes without saying. I dearly love it.

I wouldn't be able to do without either tractor. I love them both. I grew up only IH but have always farmed with Deere as an adult because of the support network. I made the conscious decision to find an 86 series despite a few of its shortcomings. It really isn't a big jump from one to the other each day. Both companies made a good product. All of my machines have held up well and I am proud to have people see what I am pulling my equipment with. A local auctioneer mentioned yesterday that he knew I only bought "nice things" and that I am picky about my equipment. I don't care how old it is, it should function the way it did when it left the factory in every respect. Both the 886 and 4440 fit that bill. Good solid dependable tractors that perform well if maintained.

if your basing it on the cab, whoo boy the 1086 I never got used to the only thing worse was the room in the deere, the newer cabs have room but the 40 series is made for 5'9 or less weighing less than 200. At 6'5 and 275 the 90 series case or 94 has more room and have been more than reliable for us, the only thing wrong with the case is the clutch during tight quarters. The quietness of the deere was nice but my poor old knees did not like the older soundguard body.

LOL, I guess that's why IH survived and DEERE went bankrupt (or was it the other way around)???

Years back I plowed one day with my friends 986 unhooked it from plow and attached my 4255 to plow and never desired to drive the 986 again. IMHO trans & scv controls on a 86 series are very poorly located for operator and I hated getting in/out of 86 series cab.

Neighbor grew up IH. Used to plow with a Farmall M. He got into a pissing match with the IH dealer and bought a 4020 the next day. He often says that the 1086 sold more 4430s and 4440s than any Deere dealer ever did. The die-hard IH guys went to see the new 1086 at the IH dealer in the morning and ordered a 4430 or 4440 (depending on what year they went to look) from the John Deere dealer in the afternoon.

Dad bought a 1086 when I was 10 years old. he bought it because it was cheap. We also had a 4430 he bought new before I was born and a 4020. No one wanted to drive the 1086. It spent all summer with the RH door removed on the blower. It pulled like mad - had a mfwd front axle. It'd outpull the 4640 he bought 4 years later all day long - mostly because of the mfwd - but no one wanted to drive it. Cab felt spacious, but it really wasn't. Getting in isn't a problem when you're 14 and fit, but what about when you're 65 and not fit? Have fun fueling it with equipment attached to it. better have your barrel out in the middle of nowhere and have your climbing shoes on. Might as well open the back window and drag the hose through the cab. Everything about that tractor felt like it was rushed into production to compete with the soundgard. The 1086 was a great engine surrounded by a terrible tractor.

I think Case hired engineers from JD when they adapted the IHC cab onto the Magnum tractors.

Only one door, and they put a freaking console right where your right knee wants to be while running most implements.

had both and thats when i went from ih to jd 4440 much better overalll and the 1086 was @itch to shift and rode rough. had a 5088 much better but stayed deere into the 55 series. then i quit playing in the dirt period. i liked the steiger and old olivers the best thou.

All I can say is you better not throw your empty pop can down on the right front floor of a sound guard cab. No way to pick it up. I can't speak to the IH cab. Never been in one.
